Cyberstorm PPC - 040/060 fans

Hi folks,

I just picked up a Cyberstorm PPC for my A3000D, I think it's the 200Mhz version ( has 200P written on the chip ).

The PPC fan is dying and I know I can get a replacement for it from Amigakit however, I don't believe they have one for the 060/040. My card has 060 onboard with no fan, it's going to need one in summer.

Can anybody recommend a good fan & heatsink for the 060 ?

Grab a 486 cpu cooler from somewhere.. ebay maybe.. same size as 060.

Will that require a modification to the drive bay in order for the accelerator to fit with the new fan ?

I just mounted a small one on the metal bar that holds down the zorro slots in my 4000d blowing onto the 060.  Easier than trying to mount it as there is not much room for mounting anything on my board.  

I replaced the ppc fan with one that plugs into the power supply.

Temperatures can get quite high in Australia during summer, I don't think air blowing onto the 060 is going to help keep it cool, especially in an A3000D where everything is tight and there isn't much room for the hot air to escape.

 Here in Brazil we have high temperatures on summer, too.

 But remember, the 68060 is not a known heater. There is other chips on boards who heats much more: Amber, CIAs, the PPC CPU, Agnus (Alice in 1200/4k).

 A simple heatsink in the 060 can keep it cool enough. Pick one from a Northbrige from a dead peecee mobo.:eureka:

I think this looks really cool, might go this route just to give myself piece of mind. I know the other chips get hot too especially in the A3000 where things are tight.

You might want to consider adding a larger Heatsink to the PPC chip, when I had a CSPPC card it used to overheat and lock-up under heavy PowerPC use, and that little stock heatsink is really inadequate, even during British winter time

I fitted something like this to mine, it clipped straight on (carefully) with 2 clips, then glued a 40mm fan onto the top.

I'd like to see some pictures of the method you and others have used used to enhance the cooling of the PPC chips, especially on vertically positioned, tower-mounted boards.

I've added a higher capacity fan to mine, but the delicate nature of the PPC chip to the board makes me want to be really sure before I make any changes that could put stress on the connection points.

Actually the stands are 4 with 4 springs (one shorter due the lack of space between the CSPPC and a mobo chip)

with a 50x50x10 Sunon fan

The 060 is the least problematic.  Having a fan blow on the entire board also helps keep ram cool.  Downside is dust.  My 060 was never a problem even when temperatures get over 30F in summer.  PPC (233mhz) crashed and locked up with the stock fan though.  I kept the same heatsink and just changed the fan.  Problem solved.  Fan blowing air on the board is just insurance.

Hmmmm - why do you think the 060 needs heatsink and fan during summer???

I have mine working since 1998 - without heatsink and fan on the 060 - even in the hottest summer no failure...
