OS3.9 and old software
« on: August 30, 2007, 05:31:09 AM »
I mostly use my Amigas to play old games and demos, many under WHDLoad. I'm running 3.1 on them now. I have a 3.9 CD. If I install 3.9, what incompatibility issues do I risk having?

Also can 3.9 be easily installed over top of 3.1 without data loss?

With whdload its completely out of compatibility risks :)

Also it can be installed over 3.1, which is recommended (it overwrites just workbench system files)
too lazy to use shift key properly...

murple: I installed 3.5 first, I did have some problems booting up at first because of the ROM update file (Amiga OS ROM Update) . I think OS3.9 has that fixed, but still get BoingBag 1 and 2 for OS3.9 ASAP. Also, make sure you have a boot disk handy, in case something doesn't work out.
That said, with WHDLoad you can get a large amount of old software to work, not everything perhaps, but a lot...

@ murple

A friend of mines OS3.9 kept going wrong after he installed his old games. This turned out to be because the Installers on the old games floppy disks were replacing the new libraries of OS3.9 with the old ones from the floppies. If you are going to install old games it's worth looking in the Libs drawer of the floppy disks with something like Dopus and/or trying to read the install script to see what OS3.9 libraries are likely be replaced.

Just thought I'd mention this possible problem :-)
