X-Surf & LS-120
« on: August 01, 2007, 11:46:41 PM »
Hi,

a very quick question.
I have both of the above but the LS-120 is not recognized by the system... I have the doubt that the limited IDE controller of the X-Surf cannot use the LS-120... am I right? :-(

Ciao and thank you

yes and no.  Out of the box an Amiga could not use a LS-120 but there were special drivers made and sold to use the LS-120.  I think they are PD now or someonr made a PD version.  Have you tried Aminet?

UPDATE

here it is:

http://aminet.net/search?query=ls120

good luck!  8-)

...need it with that OS4 beta driver....
Idefix97 does have a driver for ls120.

Any IDE interface should be enough for LS120. Just write a mountlist for the drive (and that "OS4 LS120" is no driver, just a mountlist entry).

Yes... I agree with Piru.
I think you have to create a specific mountlist with LS-120 disk "features" and the device that recognizes the port where your LS-120 unit is connected.
If you use also not-AmigaDOS formatted disks, you'll have to create a second mountlist where you have to add a string with the right filesystem, i.e. CrossDOSFileSystem.

In short, TRY THIS!

Don't forget to change the device with the one that controls the X-Surk IDE port.
If you put those mountlists in Devs/DosDrivers, they'll be mounted automatically after booting, otherwise you can put them in Storage/DosDrivers and mount manually from the Shell when you need.

Just a question: does the IdeFix "FindDevice" utility recognize your LS-120 unit?

Ciao! :-)

I have been using an IDE LS120 drive on the standard IDE port so I doubt an X-Surf would be any problem at all, just make sure you alter the mountlist to point to whatever the x-surf names its ide port (xsurfide.device?)

You say not recognized.. is that in a hdtoolbox scan? because it should be listed there (but as not usable) so check you have it set to master if its the only one on the IDE interface.

Hi,

ok... let's make a step backward.

I mounted the LS-120 and it "seems" ok... :-o
I tried all the files from Aminet and they do not work (I changed the device to the right name... only a doubt, for master unit I use the "0", right?).
I used the IDEFix LS-120 features and they do not see the LS-120... IDEFix has a program for configuration that checks all internal controllers and it does not see the unit.
HDToolBox does not see the unit either...
Ok... I could not test the unit in other computers so it could be faulty... this is my only doubt... :-(
I started this 3d to see if somebody had ever used a LS-120 with X-Surf... a real feedback...
I try to find out a PC (not I have only a laptop) so that I can test the unit for sure... :-o

I have also some doubts since it's written in the small manual: "the timing is not configurable (i.e. only new harddrives will work), and...". I also read it would not be possible to use CD-burner... that's why I have anyway some doubts...

Ciao and thank you

Does the unit do the normal bzzt click bzzt click when you apply power? cause yeah it sounds like it "could" be dead, either that or you have the IDE cable in upside down I guess.

Hmm, sorry but I dont have a clue about the X-Surf but the Buddha cards came with LS120 mountlists if I remember correctly so I dont see why the X-Surf, made later, would be worse...

Yes... the unit works... it makes the rumors my parallel other unit makes! And I can eject floppies with no problems...

My main doubt (apart my ability to create dedicated mountlist) is the X-Surf controller itself: it's not a complete one! You can read also in Amiga HW... I "supposed" it would be able to use an LS-120 but not sure... that's why I looked for somebody with direct experience in this matter...

What they are talking about is how many streams of data it can work with uninterupted.  Most IDE controllers have atleast two (one for each master/slave setup).  For the X-Surf, it is one for all of them to share.

Therefore you can't use a burner as it requiers uninterupted data feed unlike a HD or other device that can hope around while reading and copying.

This problem or the one reguarding power cunsuption of 2.5" HDs have no direct appliction to your problem.  This rules out one area to worry about eh?

Did you remember to drag the XSurf_IDE driver to the Expansion drawer? The device name will be xsurf_atapi.device or something similar, which HDToolbox won't detect by default - you need to change its tooltypes to do so.
