A1200 external cdrom.

I now have most of the essentials for my Amiga,

Kickstart 3.1 roms
Blizzard 68030
2 gig hdd
Amiga os 3.9

I'm not going to tower it and now things are looking difficult,i need to no the best way to get a cdrom installed
external as i don't want to damage the exterior.

Ive been looking about and seen some strange looking set ups      :crazy:

I no i need to get the cdrom going so i can install OS 3.9 :)

If you don't want to damage the case, why not do it  PCMCIA style?

I'm sure there are multiple adapters that will work on the A1200.

Oh, and this is my 0x100th post. Yay!

Simplest answer is to use a Squirrel scsi PMCIA interface with external scsi CDRom.I've found mine works a treat.The CDRom has it's own power supply which helps as the standard power supply for the 1200 is not reckoned to be strong enough to run everything from.

Since you have a blizzard accelerator, you can also get the SCSIkit which will allow you to set up the same CDdrive, plus, give you the means of adding an insane amount of RAM. Finding them is another story.

I have almost exactly the same goals/plans for my amiga 1200.  I am thinking USB though becouse I have found SCSI to be a major pain in the butt, though it may be a cheaper route.

In any case I was thinking this:

I have walked the SCSI-path myself and find it a great way to expand your Amiga. Especially when you are able to find the optional SCSI-board to connect to your Blizzard turbocard, the results are great. I now have my A1200 connected to a grand total of seven SCSI-devices, which completely fills up the SCSI-chain. This includes a harddrive, scanner, cd-rom and cdrw-drive and three different removable drives (zip100, sq3270 and a 230 MB mo-drive).

SCSI rocks big time with your Amiga and gives a much 'neater' setup compared to IDE-flatcables dangling around the exterior of your Amiga...

Looking about trying to get a external device is very hard or very expensive i might go for internal   :crazy:

I have the turbo blizzard 1230@50 Phase IV MK3 with SCSI and 64MB RAM (FASTMEM!)

is it no problem to insert the PCMCIA connector into the Amiga 1200? Won't this give any interruptions?

Can you tell me? :-?

The cheapest way to do it is with these products (this method involves no hacking of the A1200 desktop case):

4-Way Buffered IDE Interface:

3.5" 40-PIN MALE TO FEMALE IDE CABLE (5 INCHES/13CM)

(connects to the 4-way buffered interface, feed the cable between the two halves of the A1200 shell with only the socket  visible)

External IDE CD drive case
(We have a few of these cases that can be use to house and power a standard IDE CD drive- you will need one more of the above cables to mount a socket at the back of the CD drive case)

3.5" Round IDE cable to connect the A1200 desktop to CD drive case

Thats an A1200, Blizzard, SCSI Kit, Internal hard drive, two external SCSI hard drives, CD-Rom drive, ZIP drive and ethernet connected to my broadband and several other computers. The monitor is a 17" Microvitec. The Squirrel works fine but don`t assume your Amiga PCMCIA slot is working . Several of my A1200 came with busted slots. SCSI is a great way to expand.

I use an Alfa Data CD1200 controller with a CD/RW burner hooked on it. Works great in combination with MakeCD software!

I have one of these (Alfa Data) which I would otherwise be eBaying.  Since you are in the UK you might be interested!  (I won`t post abroad, sorry)

£50 gets you the Alfa Data, IDE cable, External CD-Rom case + kettle lead, Quad speed CD-Rom.  The external case includes stereo phono sockets for CD audio out.  Postage would be included in the £50!
