I got my A1G3XE today!!!
« on: June 24, 2003, 12:08:00 PM »
Yep, it's true! I finally picked up my A1G3XE motherboard today! There was some small troubleshooting with my new address-delivering, but it shorted out nicely:-) Now i have it!!!

While at it, i just read about the new PowerMac G5-line, closely teamed up with IBM! Yes, the new 970 CPU! Finally a 64-bit PowerMac! It was about time!

I'm very sure that probably by next year, we'll see this feature to the MicroATX AmigaOne, too, which is meant to be the ideal solution to the Linux-server market!!! A great potensial! Motorola has a lot to learn from IBM, that's for sure!!!

Amiga, time for a 64-bit AmigaOne-XE, too!!!  :-)  :-D

Congratulations Helgis! To be honest I started to wonder where you are nowadays, and I'm glad to see that finally you've got your AmigaONE! What about a review?

I see many many threads coming regarding OS4 till the end of the year... :-)

Hi, glad to see a feedback here:-) I will definitely make a review of my new system when it's up and running...

And, i will try to convince Eyetech that there IS possible to make a 64-bit PPC AmigaOne like the one introduced into the PowerMac G5-line, using the new IBM 970 PPC-technology! Should be great...Remember that Eyetech DID mention a MicroATX AmigaOne-XE motherboard, so using the new IBM 970 PPC-technology, it shouldn't be a problem...and we will have an extremely powerful AmigaOne-system, genially for the Linux-market, and ready to run the AmigaOS 5 when completed, which will be a true 64-bit SMP-OS!!!

@Helgis

The mATX-A1 is still supposed to have the ArticiaS, and trying to get a 970 on that
makes just as much sense a putting an AthlonXP onto a old Pentium1-board
still using EDO_RAMs.

Even IF MAI hat the ArticiaSa or P ready, and even IF they had a working eval-board for
it, it would still makes little sense to strap such a CPU on it. And offcourse that would still
be an eval-board miles away from being enduser-ready.

Not to forget that this would be a whole new HW-plattform whichwould have to be
directed by Hyperion.....

We could be talking about a million of $ here, at a time when they haven't even remotly
regained what they invested in the A1/Teron, not to speak of the money lost in the
Escena-debacle.

Don't expect anything 970-based in the Amiga-market before 2005.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

@Kronos

It would not just be down to ArticiaS. But please go ahead and explain why:

... in your own words ( in *technical* terms please ).
Hate figure. :lol:

I just had THE phonecall from Eyetech.  Apparently my G4 will arrive tomorrow.  To be honest, it had been so long I had no idea what the woman was talking about at first. :-)

@DaveP

What is so hard to understand with it ?

Strap AthonXP onto a Pentium1-board.
Pair the 970 with an Articia_S
Or just look at a 020-accel without mem for an A500.

All these things can be done with just enough sweat, but all these setups will suffer
from severe bottlenecks in the RAM-bandwdith.

And the RAM-bandwidth is one of the key-factors that make the 970 so attractive.

You deserved it Helgis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-----

BTW I actually do agree with Kronos on this one - if we assumed that all PPC boards supported the 970 (I know they certainly don't), IMO Apple's latest mobo is the only one with all the features needed to get the full potential out of it - anything else would be like putting a jet engine on a bike.

But hopefully boards will soon appear that do it justice, when MAI support it.

I'm with Kronos... 970 paired with a G3/4 chipset is asking for slow performance...

@Kronos

There is nothing hard to understand about it from my perspective, however I was wondering if this was some new facet of the Articia-S "bug" that we were all previously unaware of. Hence asking you to explain why.

Given its merely a matter of chipset design I can find no fault with what you have said.
Hate figure. :lol:

I hear AOS5 being talked about... 64-bit, SMP, Memory Protected, portable across architetures, single executable binary... But given that AOS4 is still in the early to mid stages of being ported from 68k to PPC... how exactly is AOS5 supposed to work and when exactly is the time frame for this?
