Powering a 3 pin case in a power tower,help please.

Right i went in to my local pc shop as i wanted a fan mainly to put infront of my bppc.

Now the problem is that it`s a 3 pin socket,so i was wondering if there is any way to power it from the tower or motherboard?
Could i just splice it in to one of the power cables on the tower??

If anyone has any ideas then please give me them as i would rather not have to go out an buy something else lol the fan looks pretty much like this.

there are molex adaptors that u plug on a cd/hd power connector that give a 3pin plug...



3rd pin is useless, it is used to measure rotation speed ... not used in amiga anyeay...

Yup, Keropi has that 100% correct  :-)
Its up to you whether you splice the fan in or buy an adapter as above.

Ah right,ah well i just one off ebay for 99p plus £1 for postage,just means i`ll wait a bit longer but its better than cutitng wires up.

The fan is max 12V but will opperate at lower power for less noise and airmovement, often these fans work reliable on 5V (read NOT all) though doesn't move as much air though does this silently. There are a few ways to go about this.

On the fan black = ground, red = power, yellow = rotationspeed signal.

Connect the red pin on the fan to red pin on one of the molex headers from the PSU will give 5V to the the fan. Connect the red pin on the fan to the yellow pin on one of the molex headers from the PSU will give 12V to the the fan. On both the above suggestions black pin on the fan goes to black pin one of the molex headers from the PSU.

However if you connect red pin on the fan to yellow pin on on of the molex headers from the PSU and at the same time connect the black pin of the fan to the red pin on one of the molex headers from the PSU the fan will get 7V moving more air and still be virtually silent.

I actually acquired a PC Gfx card a while back that had a special slim-line custom fan with sense line bolted onto a heat sink. Unfortunately, the reason I ended up with the card was down to the fact that one of the vanes was missing from the fan.
Not knowing whether a lack of a RPM sense input to the Gfx card would cause the card to automatically shut down, I ended up bolting a AMD processor cooler fan to the heat sink as these fans have the same three lines as the original fan (Yellow was the sense line...Just to confirm that), even though the relatively low end Gfx card now takes up two bays rather than the one just due to the fan!

Yeah, if you can buy a fan adaptor for next to nothing, then go for it. It is possible to splice into PSU rails, but in order to a really decent job (E.g. Not actually cutting through the wires at any point in order to keep resistance as low as possible, using heat shrink by disassembling the Molex plug at the other end to get the heat shrink on, etc) it can take some time.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings ... Hodgkinson.
Main A1200D: WB3.0, 3.1 ROMs, 2GB HDD, Blizzard 1230IV (64MB RAM + FPU) and a whole load of custom heatsinks... :flame:
