Hi All,
I was having a trip down memory lane looking for info on the Amiga to see what's out there.  I used to own and still do own in fact an Amiga 500.

I see there is a new Amiga OS4 available now.  My question is, how do I get it?  Where can I download it?  Also will it run on my PC?  Do I need an emulator?  How could I install it etc.  Sorry if these seem like basic questions, but I've just read about it and I can't seem to find a download of the OS.  Is it free or do you have to buy it?

Any info would be great.

OS4 ownership is in a middle of a law suit so do not expect to see it on any PPC based machines for awhile, if ever.  No, it will not run on your PC.  If you want a native Amiga like OS, try AROS.  For a new PPC machine that will run (think it's not currently available to be purchased with MorphOS) Amiga like OSs in the next couple of months (Morph and AROS), look at EFIKA.

If you'd like to try Amiga emulated on your windows PC, then try this.... Windows ported Amiga Emulator.

But it is only good up to versions 3.x. Version 4.0 is currently only for specific PPC hardware that isn't being manufacured or sold right now.

There is no solid date for a port of MorphOS to Efika yet, so your safest bet is to wait and see; the dispute between Genesi (the company behind the Efika) and the MorphOS team was significant so it could be a while.  In the meantime, you can try AROS on your x86 box, that's a free download (AROS is Open Source).  There's even a LiveCD so you can safely experiment without reformatting your hard drive.  The biggest problem with AROS right now is lack of software, so if you want to run existing software your best bet is Amiga Forever from Cloanto, it's UAE with licensed ROMs and a software bundle.  That's payware but it's very good value.

Excuse me, but what dispute? You'd think I'd know about any dispute if there was any.

MorphOS on EFIKA and the latest developments were shown at Amimajówka 2007 -  pictures.

Here is a recent example of Genesi offering the MorphOS team money and them still not taking it.  I have no idea what's going on, but the MorphOS team are clearly unhappy enough with Genesi to not consider a business deal.  Maybe it has something to do with this, it was a few years ago but the people who put up that website look pretty p*ssed off to me.

Anyway, this is getting off topic.  The original poster wanted to play with next gen Amiga stuff, and for now that means either buying hardware that's no longer made or steering clear of OS4 and MorphOS.

Oh, and as my personal opinion: Yes, EFIKA does run MorphOS, but for the best experience grab motorollin's PegII (moto - you can send the money to my account now ;-)).

It is not free and can only be bought on a physical cd medium. It currently also do not run on anything besides the AmigaONE.

That's good to hear.  If you look at my links, the comments are also dated November last year, so the resolution must have happened soon afterwards.  Still, the original poster wanted to know something he could use (presumably now), and if there's anything that one can rely on in the tech world, it's delays.

Speaking of which, if Amiga Inc and Hyperion are still playing their games by the time MOS gets ported to something like that PASemi board ACK was announcing a few days ago, OS4 might just lose a convert...

Indeed, if you must have something absolutely right now, WinUAE is the way go.

If you havent used an Amiga since the A500 then you'll be pleasantly surprised with a WinUAE and AIAB combo.

It's like having a high-end Amiga on your PC and you can still play 99% of your old A500 titles.

Not sure if your questions were answered.  I hope so.

Anyways, to summarize, you cannot get Amiga OS4 right now.  You cannot download it.  It will not run on your PC.  It will not run on an emulator.

Some beta testers and developers have Amiga OS4 running on classic Amigas.  These machines have PPC accelerator boards.  Not sure which manufacturer.

Amiga OS4 was also bundled in a product called the AmigaOne.  The motherboards are no longer being manufactured.  They also had PowerPC CPUs.
