OS 3.5 on an A 2000?
« on: May 03, 2007, 06:03:24 PM »
Should I be able to install OS 3.5 on an Amiga 2000?

Documentation with the OS 3.5 CD doesn't mention that machine.

- The 2000 is equipped with the 3.1 ROMS

- Plenty of RAM (Need to verify)

- The boot hd has OS 3.1 on it. Works fine.

- The CD drive works properly

- I've got well over 20 megs of disk space.

- I've got a 030 accelerator in there.

Problem: When I insert the os 3.5 CD, I get as far as doing a pre-installation. When prompted to reboot the Amiga, I remove the CD and any floppies. The Amiga reboots and then I insert the CD again and move on to the installation (That's radio button 2). Well, it doesn't want to do the install. It asks to do the pre-install again, as if nothing happened the first time around.

I don't know about OS3.5, but I installed OS3.9 on my fairly basic A2000 (KS3.1, SCSI HD & CD ROM, 8 MB RAM expansion) over the existing OS3.1 installation.

The only problem I had was that after installing the supplied "updated" drivers for my Cybervision 643D graphics card it cratered and went into a software error/reboot loop.  I've been informed that this was because I should have used the original disks that came with the Cybervision card (not the updated ones), but I haven't got around to reinstalling yet.

I've had both OS3.5 and 3.9 working well on an A2000/040.

Make sure you create a boot floppy made by OS3.5, then boot with that and install.

Looks like my install cratered too. (I like that expresssion). It's not letting me build the emergency boot disk at this point. Ha! Should have done that first.

Will start over with a clean 3.1 install and do like ral-clan said, preparing the boot disk first. :-)

Thanks for your advice!

It truly is a good idea to make the boot floppy first, But then the 3.5 install "should" go smooth. I am still running 3.5 on my A2000, and have never had a problem (software related).
The Spectrum video card has worked fine, as does the Mega Chip 2000.

I finally got OS 3.5 installed and running on an Amiga 2000. Once I did a fresh install of 3.1, I had no problems installing 3.5.

@Fester

If you have an A2000 GVP Combo board you may have problems installing the ROM Updates for 3.9.  I, for the life of me, can't get them to work with my GForce030 and 040 setups.  Funny though, I have an A4000 with a GForce060 and that one works fine with 3.9 rom updates.  Go figure
