amiga 1200 + wireless == possible?
« on: June 12, 2003, 11:43:25 AM »
hiya people

just got my old amiga 1200 up and running, with a 030 card and some memory

i want to connect it to the network, but don't really want to have wires running to it

got a linksys 802.11b and a linksys 802.11g (pcmcia)
is it possible to use one of these with my amiga?

if not, are there ANY wireless cards out there working in an amiga 1200?

if not :(, where can i get a cheap 10mbit ethernet nic that works?

thanks in advance

/ d

ps. yes, i've googled, not found anything :(

I'm not sure that the wireless cards will work, but if you decide to go for an ethernet pcmcia card, check this first:

http://us.aminet.net/aminet.cgi?string=cnet+pcmcia

The readme lists all compatible pcmcia nics you can use on your A1200.
Anyway is the only way

Since you already have the cards, stick them in the Amiga, download the cnet driver and see if it works. If not, I *think* there is another PCMCIA NIC driver for NE2000 compatible cards, and there is a GOOD chance that it'll work with either that or the cnet one.

Even if it doesn't work, you've nothing to lose!

It will not work.  (It shouldn't anyway).  The wireless card is different from a standard ethernet NIC and needs additional info for WEP (if you have encryption turned on) and the SSID.  These are required info for the wireless card to communicate with the Router/AP.

Could you plug a standard PCCard NIC into the A1200, then wire that to a cheap switch/router under the desk, then plug the wireless card into that?

Or....

A1200 ->NIC -> Wireless Bridge
.
(Wireless Cloud)
.
Wireless Bridge -> Switch/Router
