Aminet file transfers. . .
« on: March 04, 2007, 09:12:58 PM »
Hey all,
  I was just wondering if it's possible to download a bunch of programs I want from Aminet, on my Vista PC machine, then copy it to a standard CD-R and then re-transfer it to my A4000? Thanks.

One thing you have to watch for is that the Windows CD filesystem for a CDR is the Joliet file system.  AmigaOS uses Rock-Ridge file system.  This means that in order to be compatible you'll have to shorten the filenames to eight characters with a 3 character extension or they might not read correctly on the Amiga.

I had problems installing Picasso96 drivers on my WinUAE installation becuase of this.  Current versions of WinUAE have solved this by making you mount the CD-ROM drive from UAEscsi.device in the emulator so the Amiga CD filesystem will be used.

@SamuraiCrow

Well, that depends on the filesystem you use. Obviously the best solution is to use a filesystem that handles both joliet and regular RR extesions.

I download to CD and transfer from the CD to My A4000 everyday.  I have never had a problem.  I use AllegroCDFS so that I can also transfer from a DVD if I want to.   Dan :-)

Hi

Not sure what Vista is... ( thinks.. No that hurts.. Stop it ) Anyway... Your question... No problem I have my A4000s and my A1200s all with CDRom drives OS3.0, OS3.1 and OS3.9 and have updated to CacheCDFS so I can see the long file names. I also use a ZIP drive to do same. Better still I have the Amiga networked to the PC and simply transfer this way. You could also get a modem for the Amiga cheap and download the very very small files direct to the Amiga and avoid using the Veester, Viystar.. Vizta.. ( what was it.. sorry head hurting again ... Is that an old system for the TRS80 or was it the Timex..whatsit.. dunno ) Hope that helps...
