A4000T back from the dead
« on: February 24, 2007, 08:29:38 PM »
Hi

Some two years ago I obtained an A4000T which is all SCSI and has a CyberstormPPC inside... When I got it home it wasn`t working. We spent several weeks chatting here on what to do, and I must have spent literally days trying everthing to make it work. Anyway I have obtained another Cyberstorm this time a MKII and have installed. I swapped the jumpers over to INT... And it didn`t work. This time I really went to town checking everything and first I found a faulty floppy ribbon and then when I put the card in without one of the plastic supports it spring into life. Then went off... then on then off. I then played around with the electrical connector on the mobo and got it working.. The floppy drive was busted so I changed this and it worked. So I got to thinking about the old busted PPC. I installed this having put back the jumpers and nothing... Then I wiggled as before and it came to life.. The small fan on the top even came on... My goodness. 133,257 RAM. No hard drive at this time just off the 4000T boot floppy.

Anyway I suspect it may not be working, or the PPC may not be working. If the PPC is fried would the card work. I have used SYSINFO and I get the following...

CPU/MHz USE)0
FPU N/A
MMU N/A ( Not in Use )

When I do a speed test I get three clicks on the speaker and the machine reboots. SYSINFO picks up a ZorroII card though only the PPC is fitted. I am aware that the 4000T uses a series of small boards.

Currently its running Desert Strike quite happily and running like a dream... But what about the PPC. Dunno.

Very very happy... My 4000T works.

Try with amigaamp to see the ppc works and stays working.
It has a internal ppc decoder in the program.
For info try sysspeed(aminet) to see if it is detecting your ppc).
For not seeing your mmu or fpu are your libs installed?
I mean 68040 lib and or 060 lib?

Hi

This is the strangest thing. I have had this machine for two years and spent hour after hour trying to get it to work. Today when I swapped the jumpers was the first time I had seen even the boot screen.  I had taken to salvaging stuff of her and leaving the poor A4000T for dead. I never ever dreamed that the PPC was working. Anyway I wiggled a few more cables and reseated connectors and like magic she is working fine. I have reinstalled the PicassoIV, Concierto, XSurf etc etc and now she is running through a large monitor using OS3.9. Its like there was never anything wrong. No doubt I will wake tomorrow and it will have all been a dream. There was this blue connector on this machine like a buffered interface that the floppy was connected, and I think there had been a Catweasel device. The ribbon was the problem the connector had come loose and the pins had come away. And so the PPC works fine. SysInfo now picks up everything and the red bar goes off the chart. So there you go... I have an A4000T with a PPC and 060 with PicassoIV, honestly, what else could any Amigan ask for...

There will be one hell of a scuzzblog on the website tomorrow along with pictures. I have just updated the website.. Including some quite strange retro beasts

That blue connector might have been a Kylwalda board, a floppy peripheral for the Catweasel.

The ZorroII board showing up in SysInfo is probably the onboard SCSI of the Cyberstorm.

Glad your machine's working again. I really love my 4000T.

Hi

I guess you are correct on that floppy controller. The ribbon off it has a twist like you see on PCs. I've been trying to source a standard cable for the A4000T tonight off Ebay, without that twisted cable. There was also Catweasel software in the batch of disks that came with the 4000T.

I gotta say that today has been magic and a real surprise. Not what I expected really. The 4000T has sat here by my side these last two years, a very sad sight.. Not now. I understand why you like them so... Wonderful size. I managed to get an unused case ( without motherboard ) a year or so ago. I may just use it now.

Thanks for that.

@scuzzb494

i have looked at your site and i must point out that there was no australian version of the commodore 64, as you claim you have in your collection. what you have is a new case for the old brown breadbin c64, the case was made by a company in australia. this case was a replacement for the old brown breadbin case, so people didnt have to replace their old c64 with the new c64c, if they just only wanted a more modern new slimmer case.

Hi

And like magic I have made that clear with a note to the base of the pictures. There were a number of case variations to the C64 I understand. Thanks for that. I like people to keep me in check.
