UPS killing my A3000UX?
« on: February 23, 2007, 01:33:41 AM »
Once in a while, after leaving my Amiga unattended for 12 hours or so, I get to it and it is crashed.  No video, and no warm resetting!  Nothing.
I have not been able to figure this out until just now, maybe..

I have my A3000UX plugged into several UPSs.  All APC's, all different.  They all do what they're supposed to.  The one the motherboard power supply is plugged into just made a weird blee-EEeeep and cut the power to my Amiga for I'd say about 50ms!  And, the A3000 went into the state stated above.
Obviously, this is really really bad.
Has anyone else had such a problem with a UPS?

Yes, but not on an Amiga.  I saw a defective UPS cook a robotic tape library once -- an ATL P1k I believe it was..
Primary:
A4000T. Phase5 PPC604e-233mhz/060-66mhz. Mediator, Z3 Fastlane, Voodoo5, Delfina, X-Surf, AD516, Peggy Plus.

Collection:
A4000D, A1200, A500, Milan060 (Atari clone), Atari MegaSTE, Atari TT030, C64, C128, Mattel Aquarius, (2) HP Jornada....

Are you sure the drain on the UPS isn't too high or the battery is depleted?

The noise might indicate a very noisy power line too...

I had some el cheapo UPS for some years. In the end the problems with the device caused more disruptions than actual power lossage would have.

Since we have all the cables undergroud here, I've since decided to live without UPS. The odd one or two power lossages per year are less pain in the ass than UPS problems were...

Same here... i dont bother with one (and didnt when the Amiga was running either)... normally in my household there are 3 computers running and a laptop... all through nothing more than surge protection.

Oddly tho.. was logged in via a remote login from work to home yesterday and we had a power cut for a few seconds! Typical... had flashed the bios on the the machine a few days earlier and the default setting incase of power failure is to not reboot... forgot to turn the wake on power connection setting!

Typical... wish i had a UPS on it then!

I saw a documentary on Sky once upon a time where some MIT engineers designed a robotic sentry you could log into to check if your house was being burgled. You could remotely control a camera and aim it at the burglers... the novel thing was the pellet gun that was attached!

I can already do that with my Amiga.  I don't have a robotic video camera though, but I certainly do have the ability to have one.

The UPS on my A3000UX's motherboard is an old APC (the very reliable ones) with relatively new batteries.  It is not running near full capacity, and I have tested it in this state.  In that case, it will give a coded beep pattern and eventually turn off, only to turn back on if you clear the fault and turn it on manually.  The batteries also check good.
I have maybe 2 dozen UPSs on computer equipment throughout my house.  I even had one on my furnace for a while.  I have never actually had any problems before.

Oh, and my power goes out all the time.  My power company is Weenergies, (yes that's really their name), and they are "Voted Best in the Nation for Keeping the Power On!"  The key word there is "voted".  I sure didn't get a vote!  I often wonder who it was that did vote!

Weenergies?

What a great name for a company!

You can get some pretty small UPS' which would be handy in any application. I think in the future a person's entire house should incorporate a giant UPS trickle charged by the sun or wind energy. There's a few people in the UK that actually sell their power back to the power company!

Luckily the only things that have burnt out here are two A500 power supplies after my A1200 sucked the life out of them.

Their logo is the same as the Women's Entertainment logo too..

I have actually lost many things due to power problems in the past.  C64 and 1526 printer included!

What was different about the 3000 UX? I thought it was just shipped with a disk of Unix?
