Opening Mercedes door with WiFi controler card...
« on: February 10, 2007, 05:08:26 PM »
Well, not really a controler card and I don't believe it, but I had someone claim a few moths ago that he had an old Asus PDA that with some software was able to save the signal from his Mercedes car key and resend it... He was more or less a friend I made last year in a formation thing and I haven't seen him for a few months so I can't ask for a demo. I think he was joking but theoretically it's not impossible right ? ... :lol: The signal must be heavily encrypted though. Not that I'm having any more ideas about it:-D, I was just curious and thought it was a nice topic to put here...

The aftermarket remote for my car is built to some standard for car remotes that apparently they all are now.  I can reprogram most modern remotes to open my car.  I don't see any reason you couldn't somehow recieve the signal when someone unlocks their car and use it to unlock their car in the future..

Entirely possible. My understanding is that the encryption is fairly weak and easily crackable. I'll see if I can find the article I read on it a while back.

Well first of all its just an audio signal.  I can open my 2006 Accord from 100s of miles away over a cell phone as long as the person on the other end is close enough to the car, or the more fun thing to do is hit the panic button, and listen to your car honk at them while they scramble for the spare set of keys you left them.   Its actually a pretty cool trick in this day and age of cell phones, because if you lock your keys in your car, you can just get someone with the spare keys to open if from very far away.

@Tig

Yes!  This trick was demonstrated successfully on a UK TV science show a couple of weeks ago (Brainiac).  I can do science, me!

They sure aren't all like that.  Every one I've ever seen is RF.

My aftermarket one's RF and it rotates the code too, so there's a fixed code that serializes the car and a changing code and the car won't open if it gets the same code twice.For it to be possible it would actually have to be within a band that the WiFi controller can actually transmit on, and data it can modulate. Not all radio signals are the same, much like the way it's incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to get an IrDa device to transmit TV remote codes.

From a different aspect, opening the car is one thing, but a lot of factory fitted immobilisers don't respond to the keyfob's signal, only to a chip in the key itself, so even if you could open the Mercedes you probably wouldn't get it to start.
Engineers do it with precision

Car thieves use was called a code grabber, it scans the air waves, ( say if they are parked in a car park) records the frequency played to a lap top. THAT IS THEN SENT TO A MOBILE OR PDA, then played back!

Then biff baff boff, the car does indeed open.

However, newer cars have whats called a roming code (rolling code) that changes every time the handset is used. the next code in the cycle, then ties up that of the remote, with that of the imobillizer ecu. As if a code is scanned, it can`t be reused.

Clever stuff. Oain in the bum for General Motors techs like me though!  :-?
