Recreate amigas?
« on: February 11, 2007, 05:37:07 PM »
Has anyone ever recreated an amiga? Like make a complete duplicate motherboard of the a1200?

What is the chance of that happening? They only made so many of those computers, and I don't know how much longer they are all gonna last.

It'd be cool if someone re-mass produced them.

I think the closest thing to that is the Draco*, which was mainly made for video tasks. Then you also have two projects being worked on currently, which is basically a a500 clone in very small factor with chipset, cpu and everything in one single chip.

There was also a a1200 clone that was of the size of a floppy disk station, but sadly only a very limited number of these were produced.

Edit: It was of course the Draco.. Thanks for pointing that out

Has anyone recreated an a1200 identical to the old one? To be holding a brand spankin new a1200 board must be weird.

I dont think there has been a new a1200 being produced since amiga technologies :( There are however still some never opened packages of a1200 magic bundle being sold here and there.

I really really hope you meant to write Draco their
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

No 'carbon-copies' have been (officially) made as far as I know. If you realy need it, get an A1200 and reverse engineer the PCB and get a few made ;-). You'd still have the problem of the missing custom chips and discontinued 'off-the-shelf' part. My bet would be on Minimig and what it could develop into.
Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

Depends, I'd say there are folks saying that exact same thing about having some kludge system being made as a A1200.  IMO, if your going to do classic, a real Amiga is required.  If you want follow on, let's get into the modern world atleast with hardware, be it AMD/Intel, Genesi. or ARM based.

Wasn't there a PCI card before that was compatible with a lot of Amiga software? Can't remember the name  :-?

That would be Mick Tinker's InsideOut. Can't recall it ever going into production.

Because our old ones wont live forever? It is already hard to find a amiga in good condition unless you pay insane amounts for it.

I myself use my a1200 for classic gaming, as there is really not emulator available that does the trick properly.
