Amiga related adventure in the SF Bay Area
« on: January 15, 2007, 01:47:56 AM »
Something interesting has popped up that might be kind of interesting, possibly an adventure. :-)

There's a post on Craigslist from someone giving an Amiga away on the peninsula. I called the number and managed to reach him. He's got an Amiga that he's giving away and its sitting in a box, waiting for someone to come and take it. The fun part is, he doesn't know what model it is. Someone gave it to him some years back, he played with it for a couple of days, and the Commodore monitor that came with it went bust. So its been sitting in his garage along with Tandys, AT's, and other antiques. All he could tell me was that its a box type with a keyboard. So, somehow, I'll try to get out there. If you look at a map, I'm in Oakland. Right now, I don't have a car, and doubt i'll be able to borrow one. But there is a dolly in the office, and recently, the area light rail has been extended near his town. So what's awaiting? An A1000, A2000, A3000? Or the motherload an A4000?    I think I'll walk it. Its a little cold, but its a free Amiga! At least its not 1000 km!

You!!! You!!!

Lucky {bleep}!  :-)  :-x

I called him this afternoon and said you came by in the morning and took it. Yesterday, I would have had to use BART and SamTrans to get there. By the time I reached him, the bus was going to stop running in an hour, so I hoped that there was going to be a pickup in the Penninsula today, which happened, except, what you did. Oh well.

Which model was it, by the way? The guy giving it away didn't know.

Hey Amiduffer,

I'm sorry I sorta snatched it from ya, but read on and you'll "understand" :)

1) At least I came here and posted ASAP to save you the trip :) (and it would have been a painful and costly one, read on)  (Luckily he also updated the CL ad to reflect the fact, rather quickly. Most lamers don't do that, which is really annoying)

2) It would have been the worse nightmare for you, trying to get here from Oakland, and believe me, you would NOT get to where he lives without a car. The bus doesn't go into the mountainous terrain where his house is. Dunno if you saw it on the map, but it's a labyrinth of worlds (anybody got the subtle hint? :), and you'd have to carry a heavy and extremely dirty box. And in the end for what? $10-20 for the trip and $100's at a chiropractor for a broken back and an A1000 and parts. Not sure if it has anything special, I can let you know when I clean it up and peek inside.

3) Most important part: this bizatch was mine, as in I sorta "deserved" it, and here's why. Last week he posted about Amiga stuff and some Mac and TRS80 gear (he still has the non-Amiga stuff in case you want). But when I went over he said "I can't find the Amiga stuff, except some books", so I took the books and grumbled. Then he showed me the Mac and TRS80 stuff and I thought he was just getting rid of it completely, so when he asked for 50$ for one of the Macs I didn't have any on me, so I gave him like $10 for a yellow Mac coz I felt bad. When leaving I said: if you DO find the Amiga stuff, send an email or give me a call, I'll come get it. Well, he obviously found the Amiga stuff and posted on CL for no money (so why didn't he call/email me?), but I only found out thanks to you :) So thank you! At this point I still didn't know it was the same guy, and had no clue as to where he was. But earlier today when I called his #, I heard the voice and realized it's the same guy. So I had a head-start: I knew how to get there and back. I had spent 30 mins going (by car) and another 30 back. So I did "double duty".

And that's how she goes :) You were right: definitely an adventure in the bay area :-D

I'll keep you in mind for first dibs on items I might not need or wanna sell, before going to eBay/CL. Come to think of it, I have a color HP printer that works with Amigas natively. Anyone interested? I'm on the borderline about selling it or not. I also got a few spare CBM monitors (those for sale but I might be able to deliver if in the bay area) if yours burns out.

Take care

My, if I had the room, I might have tried the Trash80. Learned a little BASIC on them in high school.

I know about those hills, I've done pickups up in that area. Good thing you were on the ball. Climbing up them with a dolly would be murder!

Just an A1000, huh? Not too bad. That was my first Amiga, gotten out in the backwoods of Maine by a country and western singer.

Thanks for the offer of a monitor. Mine is starting to have problems, although thanks to the A3000's VGA port, I'm using a borrowed flat screen.

Heh,

well he still has'em Trash 80's if ya want... Start cleaning up that ole basement :)

You know the hills and done pickups!! ("done pickups" sounds funny :)  I guess I forgot I was talking to a cult member :)  You most likely know the bay area inside out, unlike me...

Heh, "just an A1000" wasn't meant to insult the greatness of the beast! But it certainly is not like the queen herself, the almighty, beautiful, powerful A3000 herself! (and my first 'migy)  Oh, an A3000 would have certainly made not just my day, but my whole year! (especially considering mine is lying on a table awaiting further surgery... - no... the hemoraging has stopped, the cancerous NiCD has been removed for some time now)

Take care

Since you're in Silicon Valley, be sure to go by Weird Stuff Warehouse over by Yahoo! HQ. I've listed it in the recomended retailer section. Commodore stuff shows up there from time to time.

A boxed A500 was there last time I visited, and I even saw an A2000 with Toaster once.

Yeah, I heard about that place 3 times in a row lately (one being your mention). I'll definitely visit one of these days, not sure if I'll get an Amiga from there or not (I'd imagine they'd be pricey and "too stock" for my taste, but we'll just have to wait and see I guess).

Thanks for the mention
