FastATA LOOONG Boot Times

Hey guys,

I got a ZIV Fast ATA installed. It boots, but takes forever. Any ideas? I have a 80GB Drive w/ 52x CD-R. ATA-3 detects both drives, both are connected on the primary channel. Hard drive is set as master and cdrom as slave.

Maybe it's validating the partitions. Are you using filesystems and OS which support drives >4GB?

takw off the cd-rom see if it goes faster


some harddrives or cd-roms dont like being slaves

or you may have set one of the jumpers to cable select by accident

i had similar problem with teac cdr drive (on a1200 fast ata)  - it just blinks 20 seconds after boot.

Isnt the Fast ATA supposed to "bypass" the 4GB limitations barrier?

Only by splitting the drive into 4gb partitions iirc.

Aren't you supposed to hook up devices in the order:
1 device  = Primary master
2 devices = Primary master + Secondary master
3 devices = Primary master, primary slave + Secondary master
4 devices = Primary master + slave, secondary master + slave
?

Long way around of saying: try putting the cdr as the secondary master, and see if that helps.

Also - if are you using 3.1 roms with no device attached to the internal a1200 ide connector it may be the delay (approx 30 seconds per boot?) is the internal ide bus scan.  You could try building an idekill device (see aminet), or just install something (anything) as master on the internal ide bus.

No you do not need to splilt the drives with the later fastata drivers.  It will just read the whole drive.

And yes you should have them both as masters, this is the problem  you are experiencing

by default the fast ATA will split partions into 4gb. If you are using 3.5 or above you can use larger partions. However I have found that the ATA will boot fastest if you use boot partions of no more than 1gb. I have several of these devices and they are fast and reliable. Also newer cdroms and DVD roms  are most reliable. Some old devices will hang. Just some thoughts of longtime user.

Just what is a secondary master?  Does this mean setting both devices as masters with no slave?  I just looked at several of my IDE devices and there is no secondary master listed as an option.   Dan

Secondary master is a device on the second IDE channel set to master.

Didn't know that about the 1 gig boot partition.
I also have a long wait to boot.

Yes the little wire goes on pin 39, it just activates the HD led.
