KickFlash and 3.9 ROM Updates
« on: December 04, 2006, 09:39:26 PM »
On my A1200, which has custom-made 3.9 ROMs, my kickstart version is reported as 45.x even before setpatch runs. On my A4000 I have installed a 3.1 ROM image and the 3.9 ROM Update in my KickFlash, but version reports 40.x (can't remember exactly - whatever 3.1 is). I know it is kicking the 3.1 image because the chips are 3.0. Why doesn't it include the 3.9 ROM Update?

Thanks

Mine does.  But, I'm just loading the BB updates and a few other things, not an entire ROM.

Have you tried using a pre-patched ROM?
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

I did try creating a 3.9 ROM for the A4000 but I couldn't get it working. I can't quite remember how I did it on my A1200 now

How far have you got with this system anyway? (I've seen your other 060 reads 040 thread!)

Have you got the upgraded hardware drivers running from the Kickflash? (the one's that can anyway). Is the 4000D clean and white? What Zorro cards are you using? Is there anything on this system that you are missing/have extra when comparing to your old 1200 system?

Also more on-topic, does the Kickflash enable you to do everything that your custom Kickstarts did in your 1200? (i.e. go straight into the OS on cold boot?)

Well I've got all of the hardware I need. I'm in the process of trying to get the KickFlash working properly before installing 3.9.

Not quite sure what you mean here?

Yes - I'll post some pics once it's all done.

I've got the KickFlash, the CV64 which came with the machine, and a X-Surf which I bought from Amigakit.

The CV64 has an automon, so when I get a scandoubler it will auto-switch between RTG and AGA screens with a single output. On my A1200 I had to change the input manually on my LCD TV, which was a bit of a pain. The machine feels a bit faster, and it feels better built than my A1200 since it's all designed to fit together. Also, using a real Amiga keyboard again is really nice.

In theory yes, but I can't actually get it to work with the 3.9 updates. If I could build a 3.9 ROM and embed that in the KickFlash instead of using a 3.1 ROM + the ROMUpdates, then I think it would work. I did try to build a 3.9 ROM but unfortunately it didn't work when I BlizKicked it :-(

Did Blizkick say something like 'object is not of required type' ?

There's a small 'feature' with Blizkick , it doesn't expect to find exec v45 in ROM and so it can't add any ExtResBuffer if needed. Basically, Blizkick is looking for a specific instruction to patch which isn't there in exec v45, and quits with that error message.
But this only applies if your kicking a ROM image and adding modules at the same time, kicking a ROM on it's own is fine.... er, hope that's clear as mud.

Anyway, there's a workaround for this problem with the last ROMSplit beta (0.96) . You'll have to extract Exec V45 from the OS ROM Update file again to have the patch applied.
On schedule, and suing

It's okay, you actually answered my question with the last paragraph on your post.

I hope you do eventually get a 3.9 image running successfully from your Kickflash.
