power issues A1200
« on: November 20, 2006, 10:13:00 PM »
I installed a slimline cdrom internal in a A1200.
Also fitted is a ide 4way splitter(buffered) and a 2.5 inch harddisk and a internal scandoubler.
Turbocard fitted is a blizzard mk3 with 32MB simm.
I hacked a AT psu for powering my system(200Watt).
System freezes on "heavy" use off cdrom.
When I power the cdrom with an extra psu ,so external all is well.
I power the cdrom with a soldered wire directly near the powerplugconnector.
Voltage I read when cdrom is going out is around 4.65V.
When I remove turbocard there is enough power it seems to keep on going.
Can it be wires off the old A500 lead which I used for the psu hack are getting old...too much resistance???
Any tips please..

Never power CD's or 3.5 hard drives of motherboard conectors. Just asking for problems. Use one of the leads on the at power supply to power it. Sometimes even turbo boards can draw to much power.

Hi I fitted a slimline cd in my a1200 with a 2.5 hd it has a cobra accelerator and I powered the cd by splitting the floppy power connector.
So the cd and floppy run off that and I use an a500 psu and has been that way for a year and havent had any problems.

The power for the cdrom is taken off the psu connector off the A1200.
So that shouln't put a load on the internal traces off the 1200.
Maybe I can fit another plug in the 1200 to power the cdrom.
Not nice but if it is necassery..

hi again just cut a floppy connector off the at psu and splice it into the the floppy connector in the a1200 you are just making a y connector cable.
Just leave the the cable as long as you can depending on where you mounted the cd.
It is all hidden inside the case anyway.

I tried that already.
Next thing I tried was taking it directly from the a1200 psu connector.
No working.
Guess I'll have to add another wire and connector from psu to A1200 to get it going.
