Something happen to Amiga.org email addresses?
« on: November 19, 2006, 04:42:09 PM »
Hi all,

Just wondering... I used receive email through an @amiga.org email address which was activated when I created my account. All email to the @amiga.org address was forwarded on to my real email address.

It's been a while since I checked it was getting through alright, but have just found the mail is returned to the sender with an error.

Does anyone know if the service been suspended or stopped?  Or could it be an unlikely problem forwarding the email to my Gmail account?

I've had a quick look through the FAQs but to no avail.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,

Over two years ago it was removed, both due to upgrades, and rampant abuse -- spamming -- by non-Amiga people who signed up JUST for the free forwarding service (as I recall).

Maybe this could be a feature available to users with more than x posts? That way you know they are legit users not spammers.

Ah... biters! :)

Two years ago makes sense.  I used the address only for my CV, which is being updated.  Now rather relieved, as there was more than a small chance of the amiga.org address going out again.  Doh.

Thanks.  Spammers are gits indeed.

Moto,

No sir.  Part of the bigger problem than even determining who should not be a part -- and the possible part you missed -- was the server change to a new system which did not grant us the ability to manually add/remove forwarding rules.

Two or three years ago, we were on a system where everything about the system was managed manually.  Now everything on pretty much every host (except for a dedicated server) is all cpanel and other automated method which keeps us from being able to do what we want.

I'll gladly give up free spam for being able to manage my own hosting account myself thankyouverymuch.

@Wayne

Fair enough :-) I wouldn't actually use a forwarding address myself, it was just a thought.

Heck, I've got less than ten posts and a perfectly legit user.  Plus I wonder if putting such target post numbers in might encourage spamming on the forums as many might post junk comments in order to gain access to features.

How about getting the wallet out?  I'd happily make a one-time Paypal payment of £20 or so to the amiga.org coffers to get the service back permanently for my login.  Even a smaller annual subscription might be palatable.

Sorry, I don't have much in the way of good ideas for the software/admin solution.  The paying-for-it idea sounds like a privilege account system with some users marked as having and everyone else as have-nots, but I'll guess that isn't in cPanel out of the box  :-(

Thanks,

Tom
