Brainstorming new "Classic AMIGA'ish Hardware"
« on: November 10, 2006, 08:08:25 PM »
Ok let's do a little brainstorming. As i don't see the AMIGA and it's OS replacing Windows and it's beige boxes on the Desktop soon, why not think about a different approach.... like the GP32 or the xgamestation do?

I would like a new "Homecomputer" that is relative cheap so that you can get one "Because it`s fun to have one" besides your e.g. Windows Box without having a too big hole in your Pocket. So you ask: Why don't you buy something of ebay then, there is all kind of good stuff. That's because if you buy a fully equipped A1200 (IDE Express Adaptor, Bigger HD, CD-ROM, 1260 Accellerator, more RAM) you have to sell your car before getting ten years old stuff that nobody knows how long it will work-and maybe paying the price it was sold ten years before.

So my new "Homecomputer"
Interim solution:

Motherboard with implemented AGA on FPGA (at least with IDE or SATA, Ethernet, USB) HD, CD
Coldfire Accelerator Card
Running AROS "CF Edition"

So why in hell do i want something with (emulated) custom chips, every 10€/$ PCI card is much more powerfull. Because i somehow like the custom chip set and i see the Problem that for the newer cards nobody without an NDA has the knowledge to write Software for the Chips (e.g. X1800). So why not begin with OCS/AGA and maybe someone can implement more/newer features to it (adding Aikiko like capabilities for C2P, more Colours, maybe it's also faster because running on faster FPGA). Hey would be the only open sourced chip set.  :-D

For what is the Coldfire? Oh the 68060 is not the cheapest part in the Freescale Price list, a Coldfire V4e with 400 Mips is about 30€ the 68060 with 100 Mips is about 300€. Unfortunately the Coldfire can only emulate an 68k without FPU (,MMU?), running 68k software natively seems to be not too easy because the Coldfire does not always do the same with an instruction as the 68k would do.
So that's why i want AROS for it. It's an Amiga' ish OS and open sourced, no way for someone locking it up (like Amiga Inc does). Old AMIGA Games and Applications should run fast enough under UAE...

Remember this is not about competing with a Intel 6800Extreme with a X1950 GFX Card and all this stuff, but thinking about a nice "Homecomputer" you can write Programs on, play nice Games, Paint, listen to and make Music, tinker with the OS, surf the internet, implement new Chipset features (Ok, only for the die hards - but they are surely somewhere out here or on the internet).

So, is it something we should bother the right people about? Or do you just want a Quad Core POWER 6 Running OS4.0 erm OS5.0?

Bye

Right now I'd be happy with something like the C64-DTV in an Amiga version:

A cheap A500 clone on a chip that we can hack to add a PC keyboard and joystick.  Perhaps with a place on the motherboard to add some sort of busboard for at least 1 Zorro II card.  Oh, and a built in flash memory chip or slot for memory card to act as a hard drive.

That would be a good start.  Not too much to ask.  Not over-ambitious.

Once we have that established, then better versions with faster processors, more expandability, RTG graphics and sound, etc.
Music I've made using Amigas and other retro-instruments: http://theovoids.bandcamp.com

Maybe the Motherboard version is not more to ask than a AMIGA DTV but less. Dennis stated he will release MiniMig plans, and Clone-A will if it's finished be a ready to go Hardware.
