« on: October 29, 2006, 12:37:03 PM »
the question is as the topic says. so is it possible to make a amiga 500 game to boot from cd and to be played on CD32?

and could someone tell me where could I go look for the SX add on for the CD32, I would really like to turn my machine into Amiga 1200 :P

any help would be apriciated.

If you can boot Workbench from a CD (not sure whether you can or not) then you might be able to run the games from there. To be honest, it would be much cheaper just to buy an A1200 than upgrade your CD32 with an SX expansion, and the results will be much better.

I have never owned a cd32, but i think it is possible to make a bootable cd out of a standard floppy game. I hope someone else can help you with that.

I wouldn't have thought it would be possible unless the game booted from a normal Workbench-formatted disk. Didn't most early games use their own boot loaders or something? (I know that a lot of disks couldn't be read through Workbench.)

It should be possible to create a bootable Workbench CD AFAIK, then you could put some WHDLoad installations on there and load A500 games that way.

Would a CD32 have enough RAM to run WHDLoad? It might with an SX expansion. But as I said, I think an A1200 would be a better option. Cheaper, more readily available, more expandable, more reliable than the flaky SX expansions.........

Yes it is possible!  There was a CD with like 444 or 888 games on it, most WHDLoad!  There is also a new WHDLoad for CD32 too to work better...

It is possible!

I`ve burned a CD with Whdload, a 3.1 WB (attention to "addbuffers df0: 20" etc.), and of course the fabulous iGame Gui. It needs a careful selection of slaves that don`t need more than 1/1.5 MB of mem, in order to get it loaded. Disable the "PRELOAD" option also.

That`s all folks ;-)

TJLazer : 444 and 888 compils are still illegal.

Making a CD32 compil isn't very hard, all is explicated in detail in Amiga Developper CD (the most complex is to build a CDTV/CD32 compatible). If you don't have a SX1/SX32 extension with fast, check especially (as Cass said) the chip mem required for each game or application selected !

Try the games on a 1200 first. If the game run, burn a copy on a CD.

As already mentioned, a new version of WHDLoad which includes a special version for CD32 is due for release very soon (next week I believe).

You can burn a bootable Workbench CD with several installs in it, but you need to have as much free memory as possible.

AFAIK the WHDLoadCD32 will only work on a plain CD32 (i.e. no SX expansions supported), but will include some tools which should help in saving up some extra ram.

My DKB High density disk drive attached to my SX-1 booted plenty of A500 floppy-based games.  It's as compatible as booting from an A1200.

Making a boot CD with Workbench on it is a great idea.

I have gone the 2.5" hard drive method and installed Workbench 3.1 back in 1994(5).  However, the SX-1 connection to the CD32 is shaky...  A CD may be better!  Ofcourse I've been recommending a "LIVE" CD for consoles based on AROS-Max for a long time.

My CD32 setup may go up for sale in a few months...  It has 8MB of EDO ram installed in the SX-1 along with a 121MB hard drive and a cable that supports a second external 2.5" drive.  At one time, I have an external enclosure that adapted a 3.5" driver to that 2.5" cable but I have no idea where it is.

Alot of CD32 games run better with this RAM installed.  UFO is a bit faster as is Liberation.  Castles 2 is another title that benefits from it.  Gunship 2000.

The best part about hooking up a hard drive via an SX-1 or SX-32 is that you can save to hard drive instead of NV-RAM.  NV-RAM fills up quick.
