Getting easylink to work
« on: September 18, 2006, 08:17:44 PM »
Hello all,

I am trying to connect my  amiga 500 to my windows xp pc using easylink 1.12 and a parallel cable. The software works on the amiga side but the software on the pc side just shows a blank  terminal screen. When I try to connect to the pc from the amiga I just get an error message saying "Remote not responding".

Any ideas?

Hmmm, have you tried changing the mode of the parallel port in the BIOS of the PC? There are several (ECP is one of the top of my head, but there are others). Certain types of application will only work in one mode or another. Just try them all to see if it makes any difference.

Yes I have tried most of them but I have a bit of experimentation left. Does easylink work under XP at all?

Dunno, never used it. Some older software doesn't work properly under XP as the LPT IO code changed significantly in XP. For example, my Willem programmer doesn't work with Windows XP's built-in parallel port driver. You have to install a replacement driver to get it to work under XP. Check in the Easylink archive for a parallel port driver which is compatible with XP. If there isn't one and it's a very old app, chances are it won't work in anything >WinME.

Your advise lead me to this homepage:

http://www.beyondlogic.org/porttalk/porttalk.htm

It includes allowio that allows usermode programs to access whatever port one chooses under windows XP. Now my parallel connection works! Thanks.

Edit: works is a bit of an exaggeration. I can list the directories but i cannot transfer any files.

At least the connection works. That's a good start. Does the software have settings for the speed of the connection either side? If so, make sure they match, and try some different speeds and see if that makes any difference.
