4000d floppy drive problem

my chinon fb-357a does not seem to be working properly. when I got the system it was not hooked up, so I hooked it up. when I insert a disk it comes up with "??" for the disk and I can not read anything on the disk(s). I have tried hooking up the cables in many ways, even tried moving the jumpers as read on another post. any ideas?

I'll ask the obvious question. What kind (density) of floppy disks are you putting in it?

every type I have, some DD, some old 500 games (dd?), whatever dpaint 4 is. etc.

I'll post this here as well, even though it's a follow-up and not a solution, sorry.

I just got another A4000d in a trade, and it has a peculiar problem. It will not write on any floppy disks. The funny thing is, it has a CatWeasel installed, and it still will not write, even using a PC drive. The hard drive works. Which is the chip that kills this functionality?

Check and see what kind of programs are set up to read PC disks. I use FAT95 and that seems to interfere with AmiDOS formatted floppies I put in DF0:, (I just use my other two external floppies)

Can the CIA be replaced by "normal" means, as in no super-human soldering? I can do the usual.

Fast and simple checklist:
1. Checked so the cable is seated propperly?
2. Is the floppy cable the right way arround? (If not floppy led usualy lighs up constant.)
3. Is the floppy placed on the correct floppy cable header? (If only 1 drive you should use the last cable header.)
4. Readhead dirty? (Read below)

Many floppy errors such as unknown disks or simple intermittent read errors can often be solved by cleaning the floppy readhead with some alcohol and a q-tip.
