SonyEricsson GC75 + A1200 - Finally I've did it!
« on: September 11, 2006, 12:50:00 AM »
I'd like to proudly inform, that I've successfully connected
and configured a SonyEricsson Gc75 PC-Card GPRS modem in my
A1200! Using a pccardserial.device and Genesis,card has
received AT commands and starts to dial the number but it
was unable to find the signal. It's caused by E/Box tower.
Within few days I will get a spare antenna for GC75,and
this should do the job. To make this card work in A1200,
you will need to use a modelling-knife,to cut off a small
piece of plastic on the left side of card.Without doing
this,You'll be unable to slide the card into the PCMCIA
slot of A1200. WARNING: This trick works fine with GC75
PC-Card ONLY! I'm not gonna take any responsibilty for any
damage done to your hardware if You try to do such hack
with any other Pc-Card GPRS modem.

If you have any questions or opinions about this hack,
please feel free to mail me: bikersnake@wp.pl

I've been wanting to do this with my GC83 EDGE card.  I'd appreciate if you keep this thread updated.

One question about the surgery on the PCMCIA card -- aren't those tabs meant to keep incompatible hardware from coming together??

EDIT: I was looking this up...

http://www.pcmcia.org/pccard.htm

Is the PCMCIA port on the 1200/600 3.3v-capable?  In this case, SonyEricssons specifications for the GC75 say "3 and 5 volt PC Card slots" so it might be a moot point.

Alas, my GC83 carries no such guarantee. :-(

Yes, the different-sized tabs are to stop you putting a 3.3V-only card into a 5V-only slot. It's likely that in this case the card was made with the wrong tab for its voltage capabilities, but in general it would be a very bad idea to remove the tab from other cards.

My theory about these tabs is that designers were not quite
sure about compatibility of GC75 with old Laptops. Finally,
They've decided to add these thicker tabs to prevent usage
in older devices. I've been talking with many people, and
most of them sends me some specs about GC75. In one of these
references there was info that GC75 uses both 3.3 and 5V.
This makes me sure that it could work.I don't have any
technical specifications of other SonyEricsson' cards,so
I truly recomend to NOT do this trick with i.e. GC85.
I've heard about one 16bit gprs modem from Billionton, but I
have no more specs. Someone could help?
I'm still waiting for a GSM antenna. If it arrives,I will
submit a test on this thread immidiately.

P.S. I'm looking for user of Siemens ES75 GPRS terminal.
This device uses both USB and COM,so it will work fine with
Serial port of classic Amiga, and maybe it could work with
Poseidon USB stack too.If anyone have such device, please
send me any useful informations.Thanks.

Today I've received a GSM antenna. After 5 hours of connecting
and configuring all that stuff,I can finally say: It's working!
This message was sent through GPRS connection using towerised
Amiga1200 and GC75 pc-card modem.I will submit a complete
solution as fast as possible but, please, let me spend some time
to combine all the informations into something "readable":)
