A4000 upgrade advice
« on: September 01, 2006, 05:15:44 PM »
I've been checking out my options for upgrading my A4000/040 and it looks like my best bet is to get a Tower box with a Mediator.

Thing is, I also want to install a scandoubler, and given the lack of Zorro III ones, I'll probably try to get an internal DCE type since they seem to still be available for sale.

As far as I can tell, this clips on to the Lisa or Alice chip, but the Mediator daughterboard also appears to sit over the top of this part of the motherboard - I'm wondering whether having this thing clipped on would interfere with that in some way?

Also, they apparently generate a fair bit of heat - would this be a possible concern given the position of the Mediator?

It should fit there in nicely. The spacers are quite long between mb and pci busboard, ie. there is quite a lot of room even between big battery and busboard.

Excessive heat is never good, so you can add small fan blowing air between busboard and motherboard to keep things cooler.

You can also consider external scandoublers, or even this which I recently bought for 88 euros (haven't arrived yet) and which has gotten quite good reports under amiga usage (works as scandoubler, flickerfixer, is compatible with high native resolutions, handles all the 24bit colors etc.) with good cable. There should be some topics about this even here.
