What's happened in the last 10 years.
« on: August 29, 2006, 04:37:35 PM »
Hi All

I have an old trust 1200 in my mother's attic that's been there for 10 years now and I'm wondering what to do with it.

As far as I remember, it was heavily upgraded for the time with 10Mb of RAM, a 40Mhz 68030 CPU + FPU and a whopping 160Mb HD!

In it's final years, it was used pretty much for programming - I had a cpp compiler and a commercial assembler package. I also seem to remember having a 286 emulator running windows 3.11 and turbo C! I also paid for an internet application suite that worked quite well - though I doubt the voyager browser that I was using would render many html pages now.

So back to my question - what's happened in the last 10 years? Has workbench been upgraded yet? Can I use a cheap PC monitor yet (and play games on it)? Can I network it? Will it use my HP Inkjet printer?

Sorry for the ignorance, but I bet a lot of people have the same questions. I have fond memories of those times and would love to know it can still have a place. I would need a decent mouse though - been using optical ones for too long now!!!

Sp please, any sensible suggestions on how to upgrade and start using it again would be welcome.

James.

to use a regular monitor you need to get a scna doubler.  They made a new external one called scantoaster it nice.   Yes the os was updates, not that muc realy. check out os3.9.  There is a threat that they will FINALY release 4.0 but you ned new hardware (that you can't buy) to run that! I find that there is quite a bit of new software out there... many new things if you have been gone for 10 years, dig around here to find them!

For playing games with an A1200 you'll have better luck with a TV since VGA scan rates don't work with most games and scan doublers are expensive.

Likewise you can get an Ethernet adapter for the PCMCIA type 2 slot (16-bit) on the left side of the case.  If you decide to do so you'll need CNet.device and a compatible network card and a TCP/IP stack.  AmigaOS 3.9 comes with a full version of the Genesis TCP/IP stack but requires you to have Kickstart 3.1 ROM in your system.

The internet browsers available for the Amiga today aren't very good but there are people working on it.

Welcome back to Amiga.org!

Amiga Workbench was upgraded to version 3.5 then version 3.9.

The Amiga A1200 can have USB ports thanks to E3B's excellent Subway USB

The Amiga A1200 can also access broadband with EasyNet software and an A1200 Wireless card

You can use a PC monitor with an RGB to SVGA adapter or better still a scandoubler/flickerfixer

Eyetech have clearly stated that they will not "make" any more AmigaONE computers. IIRC Alan Redhouse stated that they have left the Amiga market.

I had no idea an Amiga could do broadband! I'll definitely be getting those too when (if?) you finally get more NOS NTSC A1200s in.

That Subway USB can only be used in a towered Amiga 1200 right? It's a pity. I wish there was a way to cram USB into a standard A1200 case (or have it external somehow).

We also offer a Subway to be installed as an option in a desktop A1200.

Awesome! Are holes cut in the case for the USB ports? (or how do you access the USB?)

Ooooh, I'm starting to get excited about this. I think I'm going to go for a brand new NTSC A1200 with a 68060, 128Mb RAM (if I can find the Blizzard 1260), internal USB and broadband... all in the original case. (no graphics card or scandoubler - I want "pure" Amiga graphics)

How much should that cost me? (one arm plus one leg?...Canada Customs will take a few fingers) Even with all this it should still cost less than my A500 upgrades.
