A3000 Purple Screen - Help

Recently, my A3000UX has been displaying with a purple cast.  If I leave everything turned off for some time (at least several hours) it looks all right for a while, before suddenly changing to that purple cast.  Occasionally it changes from one mode to the other.  I don't think the problem is with my 1960 monitor, because the behavior does not seem to be influenced by turning off the monitor, just the main computer.

I've tried taking the top off the case, but nothing looked suspicious to me.  The problem still persists with the top off, so heat does not seem to be affecting the problem.  Any suggestions?

I think it is your monitor.  I had a Philips CM8833 which did just the same.  A half hour into using it (after it had heated up), it would turn purple.  Sometimes a really hard whack on the side would fix it for a while then it would turn purple again.  Most likely the green gun on the monitor has an intermittent problem and is on the way out.

The only way to be sure it to try your A3000 on a different monitor or on a TV.  If it still happens on a different monitor, try stripping your machine down and rebuilding it, cleaning the contacts on your zorro slots and any expansion cards, and re-seating any socketed chips.

The easiest way to tell for sure is to hook up another monitor. At least with the A3000 you can use a VGA type to check it out.

Hook up a game machine to the monitor and see if the problem persists.

The VGA port responds differently than the RGB port.   Had problems with an older a3000 in respect to the video ports.
VGA screen went funky through the VGA port, hooked up an old RGB monitor without problems.

Also have a CEI A1962 RGB monitor that didn't display when recived it in shipping.  Took the monitor case off to look around. Reattached the connector that goes onto the back of the CTR.

When you mention 'changing modes', do you mean screen relolution/ color depth?

Are you sure that it's not one of those startup screen color errors? (flashing red/blue)

Thanks to all who replied.  I was putting off trying a new monitor (I thought I needed a special adapter), but when I plugged in a VGA monitor it worked fine.  I guess my old 1960 monitor is on its last legs.

you can solder it back into working condition...it's just not a fun job.  sounds like it just a short.  This happens over time as the solder melts from the heat being pulled down by gravity....
