« on: August 20, 2006, 09:31:41 PM »
an Amiga??
Only joking!!!
Probably had this question before but what is the essential/best software for using the internet on an Amiga 1200 (ideally 060 AGA).
Not what software to connect to the internet as Im already connected using AWeb just cant seem to view many sites that well.
What other stuff can I do. Im sure Ive seen some Yahoo and Msn messengers but unsure if they were for PPC or OS4 or something.
Oh and which are freely available and which do I have to buy/register

With webbrowsers there really is only AWeb, IBrowse and Voyager. Just try all of them, all three have good and bad points.

AWeb is nowadays free (as you've probably noticed ;-) and get little updates every now and then (http://aweb.sunsite.dk/).

IBrowse is still waiting new version, but that might still be far away. Demo-version can be downloaded at http://www.ibrowse-dev.net/ and registeration is available at iospirit.de.

Like IBrowse, Voyager hasn't seen many updates in the viewpoint of normal 3.x user. Demo-version can be downloaded from http://www.vapor.com/. There is also registration information, and Voyager can be acquired also with NetConnect3 -package.

Instant messenger - well, there is Jabberwocky, which is nowadays free - I think other messengers for OS3.x are quite dead, but other are welcome to correct me on that. There is naturally some other active messengers available, but they are not for mainstream Yahoo/MSN -compatible.

If you want to use AGA for web browsing I suggest you use these patches for it to be more pleasant experience, they will speed up graphics a bit and save you chip ram

wrong dude.  Amiga has Almost every messenger you can think of:

Gadu Gadu  =  Gadami
Jabber     =  JabberWocky
MSN        =  AmiMSN  and Epistula? and JabberWocky
AIM/ AOL   =  AmigAIM
YahooIM    =  JabberWocky and ?
mIRC       = AmIRC , WookieChat, BlackIRC, GrapeVine?
HotLine    = AmiComSys

and more
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

I used an A1200 with an 030, and 8MB of RAM. (plus Hard disk, natch!) doable, but a bit cramped - I had to run everything on the WB to save Chipram for images. of course, I could only run IBrowse and YAM seperately - the machine ground to a halt otherwise !

its not so much the CPU horsepower (though that helps with JPEG decoding), but you will need RAM - the more the better ! if you get the 060 you should be Ok.

FBlit is good, as mentioned before. not tried the other one. it also helps to tweak the screenmode as compromise between number of colours, and speed, but dont use anything less that DBlPAL/NTSC - Super72 is recommended if you use one of the smoother versions on Aminet - I even had a hack to run AGA in 1024x768 on my Mikrovitek 1438S, but it was a bit flickery, and quite a ChipRAM hog!

@Leirbag

Well I just thought about messengers using Yahoo & MSN -"protocols" for os3.x and which still get updates once in while. But you are ofcourse correct about those.
