Amikit makes my Amiga look poor
« on: August 04, 2006, 06:05:27 AM »
Hey!
Yesterday I tried Amikit, which I must admitt really looks great. Lots of effort has been put into that making it all work quite well.

But than I switched on my Amiga and I didn't like it coz my Amiga looks poor compared to Amikit. I tried to install some of the programs used in Amikit on my Amiga but it became unstable at first try so I didn't bother.

Anyone having the same 'problem' ?
Don't want to spend lots of time configuring on my Amiga, but also don't like the poor look of my Amiga anymore.

Anyway, is there a way to easily upgrade all your icons on your computer ? I've seen some fancy icons but can't be bothered to copy-paste every single one of them.

I know what you mean HellCoder, I have used Amikit too and like the way it looks.  Like my signature says, there is never enough time to tweak all my Amigas, damn work, or sleeping is always getting in the way.  In years long past, configuring Amigas was a lot of fun, but playing games and doing other work with them was more rewarding.  I just can't stay up until 2am or 3am every night like I used to anymore.

 :-D
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

I setup desktop on my A4000 to look like Amikit, and everything work superb. I don't use OpusMagellan (no support for PowerIcons).
All you need is Birdie2000, VisualPrefs, MagicMenu, ToolsDeamon, (afa_os for ttf fonts support), and loads of time to setup all.

I've actually gone the other way, discarding excessive eye candy in the quest for greater performance. These days, every OS is skinned to high heaven, I quite like my minimalist amiga os configuration

Although I admire the whole AmiKit project I can't say that it is something for me. I think it feels rather messy... in a way... and it takes forever to get hang of the entire system with so much installed and so much changed. I like control, and that is something I don't have the time to learn how to have when using AmiKit.

My solution was to decide which parts of AmiKit I really do enjoy and implement them on one of my real Amigas. ShowAmiga96, for example, and one of the themes which can be found in AmiKit together with some other stuff. That way I can still have full control over my system... while enjoying some of the eyecandy and software solutions found in AmiKit.

But, like I said... it is a fascinating project, nonetheless.

Yes to that. I generally use a four-colour Workbench. I decided I liked it more than the highly coloured setups.

I feel the same way.  Packs like AmiKit, etc. look nice, but they don't look or feel like an Amiga.  I really hate seeing recycled Linux icons being used on the Amiga (although, Kens set blue set looks great, but there aren't enough of them).  If I wanted to look at a PC, I'd look at a PC.

My setup: VisualPrefs + Birdie (with Ken's OS4 Theme), ttflib, titleshadow, glow icons...  Simple, clean, and fast.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

One thing I tried when I still had an hi-end Amiga with 060 and graphics board was to reinstall Workbench with minimal addons and original icons in 4 colors.

The speed was amazing and I think that the original icons look fine. There was something elegant with such a 'scaled' down workbench, almost like comparing TWM with KDE or Gnome.

I think a good tradeoff is to run MWB since it is only 8 colors. I have seen people running NewIcons on 020 systems, ugh, I remember when I tried it on my 030 system, it was slow as hell, couldnt stand it at all.
