help with rudimentary networking.
« on: July 25, 2006, 02:57:37 PM »
Any ideas on how I can set up a rudimentary network between OS4 on A1 and my A1200 ?
I dont really wanna be investing in new hardware, so a null modem option is it, really (unless I can do something using the parallel ports).

term software would be handy, but what to use ?
or a tcpip network, but I'm not really sure what I'm doing here either !

I do have a Silversurfer in the 1200 if thats any help...

note: I only have the one monitor, so I'd kinda like to use one as a server having set that up first !!

I know you said that you do not wish to spend money, but a compatible PCMCIA NIC or Wi-Fi card costs peanuts these days on eBay (modern laptops all have Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi built-in, so there's not much demand)

There's a good reason for not wanting to la$h out on goodies:

1. I'm skint. boracic, whatever your favourite phrase is.
2. My accelerator is a cheapo job that maps its max 8MB SIMM into the A1200's 24bit address map, clashing with the PCMCIA.

ok thats two reasons, but I wasnt expecting the spanish inquisition !

A nic WOULD be nice as the A1 has an unused ethernet port, but so would the money ! besides, the Silversurfer can handle some pretty good bit rates - at least 100kb/s.

I would go for TCP/IP over the parallel port using magPLIP. However, you need a special cable to do that which is easy to make. And I don't know if this stuff runs on OS4.

thanks for taking the bait so graciously.

back OnT: of course, I could push the boat out and kill two bods wi one stone if USB is usable for peer to peer networking ? I could then get a subway and replace the Silversurfer...

I downloaded Ami2PC which I may try tonight. if I get chance. gah ! the hectic life of a dad of 3!!
