Help with ZIP RAM
« on: July 21, 2006, 01:25:30 PM »
Hi,

I have a Harms 030 Professional accelerator for my A500. It has 4MB of ZIP RAM already onboard and room for 4 MB more. Here's a picture:

In fact it's the exact same one as pictured there. The previous owner made these photos.  :-)

I am looking to max the card out to 8Mb, but I'm a bit confused over what to get.. I have been doing some research about ZIP RAM and I got some info from old Usenet postings. From what I understand there are several things I need to take into account:

- static mode or page mode
- memory 'speed' (60ns, 70ns, 80ns?)

I see 8 sockets on my board. I found a source that sells ZIP RAM. Can I use any of these for my board:

I'm a little confused as to how much RAM this actually is. What does 1x4 mean? Is it 4MB? Also will those 4MB come in 8 chips so they will fit into my board? Also can I mix static and page mode? Help!
 :-(

I would advise that you try to get exactly the same type of zip chip that is already on the board.  I don't mean brand, but speed and page/static.  You do NOT want to mix those types of ram.

What is the number on them.  You can figure out what they are with that number.

Hey that's funny !!

I sold you that turbo card and i can also help you on some extra zipp's if you want to. Just give me a mail and things will be solved. It is 80NS but that doens't really matter with that board. I also used 8mb on it.

1Mx4 Zip RAM means that 1 chip is 4Mbits or 512kbytes.

4 chips would be 2Mbytes.

16 * 4Mbits = 16Mbytes.

I have a feeling you are going to need page mode ram for those.

Generally if the number ends in 00, they are page mode... and if it is 02 they are static.

Most likely you have something that ends in 4400

@Henk

You don't happen to have 4MB static column ZIPs for sale, do you (8x xx4402)? My A3k's still missing the last bank to max out the board. I've got 4 MB fast page but have been very hesitant to actually put them in...  ;-)
