Can a real Amiga use .adf files?
« on: June 07, 2003, 08:15:20 AM »
I apologize if this information is all over the place. I simply can't find it.  I'm quite certain that it's possible to run an .adf file (such as a game that doesn't normally work off anything but a floppy) straight off a hard disk with an Amiga.  I'm thinking... wow... wouldn't it be nice to put all those floppies away after all these years. I thought I had the solution with AmigaUAE, but it ran SO SLOW you'd think the poor Amiga was emulating something other than an Amiga. I just want to use .adf files off the hard drive rather than games off this box o' floppies. Anyone know what utility I need to be searching for?

A lot of the .ADF files are used  by HD-Install&fix programs like WHDload and JST

Some ADF files contain AmigaOS disks so use transADF program to extract the files from them and then use a program like embedder to degrade the computer in  order to use them.

It´s also possible to make a virtual floppy drive on your harddisk. This would make the game think it was running a floppy. Only Os-freindly games can do the trick...

Yes it will work, you need some floppies and find out it the file you are running is a HD version or floppy version.  You need a program to change it to the Amiga side were it belongs.  Unzip the program, then download tsgui.lha from aminet.  It will change it to the Amiga friendly.  You also may need a game program to run in the background to slow your system down or make it more OS1.3.

Try Diskimage from the Aminet. You can load a diskimage as a new drive with it.

FMS is one of the better virtual floppy mount programs. DMS archive can be unpacked straight onto a FMS virtual floppy, so I'd expect that ADF files can be as well.

Your biggest problem will be with disks that use custom boot loaders to do their magic for the game.

FMS can be found on Aminet and is extremely easy to setup.

The ADF and FMS image format is identical, you can actually just copy the ADF image to the FMS directory (there will be an FMS: assign usually) and mount it. The filename needs to be in the format diskx, where x is the device number you want to mount.

Yes if you want to use a Non DOS adf image in WB you will not be able to unless you WHDLoad it.  (Disk will not mount) I would say around 80% or more of the games are NDOS.  I think you need to look into WHDLoad.

Most games don't work to modern systems without hd-loaders/degraders. The best is WHDLOAD. http://www.whdload.de

I am just getting into WHDLoad myself.  I think that you can find your loader for your game at whdload.de and then you can use ADFBlitzer to make your ADF back into a real floppy and then WHDLoad-ize it.  This is my plan.  That way I can keep my floppies safely stored.

Please pay the $20 to the author of WHDLoad also, I would like to see this utility continue to thrive and be developed :-)

Good Luck on your adventure.

I think 'WHDLoadizing' might not work if its a 'cracked' version, so just use your original floppys.

I don't see a point in making a real floppy because whdload should use .adf directly, or does it?
Better sorry than worry.
