Floppy Drive Issues
« on: July 07, 2006, 05:58:20 AM »
Hey all,

Been a while since I've posted, I've been lurking a lot  :-D Anyways, been keeping up with my miggies, my 1200's are no longer stock!  And that's where this comes in - I had some issues with an A1200 mobo (keyboard not working mainly), and rather than stuff around with it lots, bought a new mobo on eBay.  It got here today, minus roms (as per the ad) so I put the 3.1 roms in (carefully  :-D ) and got the thing to boot up ok!  It works fine with the accelerator as well.
The problem is - my floppy drive (which was working with the old mobo) appears to have given up the ghost.  When I turn the 1200 on, the HD clicks, then the fd gives two very quick clicks close together, not the normal speed.  If I put a disk in, it sounds like it's trying to read the disk but makes a continuous sound, again very fast.  Very strange  :-(

Anyone have any clue what it could be?  External disk drive works fine, HD works fine, the only thing I can think of is the FDD is from a Commodore 1200 and the mobo is from an AT1200.  Would this be the problem?  Thanks for any help in advance!  :-)

Hi,
the solution is written on AMinet in the hack directory  :rtfm:

Hello,

If your original A1200 was an Amiga Tech motherboard and you are going to Commodore A1200 motherboard then I would see the problem trying to put Amiga Tech PC Floppy Drive
into Commodore 1200 Motherboard as Amiga Tech had to hack
PC Floppy drive to work and they put this hack on the floppy cable. But in your case your situation is in reverse so I would cheak the floppy cable or sadly to say your disk drive has had it's day.Try it on other A1200 if you know anyone in your area.Merv
 :-?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  I had a search through the hack directory on Aminet and didn't find anything except guides on how to fix Amiga Tech drives and how to use PC drives, etc.
As for testing the drive on another 1200 - I have another one here, but it's also an Amiga Tech one, they're both 1D4's.  I'll give it a go to see if maybe it's the floppy controller.
I'm not too worried as I've got a HDD going in it, and I have external drives, but it's still a bit annoying/worrying  :-(

Is an everyday story for our amiga drives. The problem I belive is the useless of drive when you hadn't mobo to your amiga. I have many drives in stock for my Amigas. Every 2-3 months I use my drives for some hours to prevent the damages of useless. But every year I lost 1-2 drives. I use the 3.5 cleaning disk, this help in many cases. Before 1 year I lost an A1010 drive because this ghost problem (but with disk in drive works fine). If didn't had disk to drive the motor spins and presented the ghost. Now my other A1010 reads fine, writes problematic and don't format at all. My Amiga 1000 drive is perfect, my A1200 drive reads fine, but don't writes or format. My CDTV drive is fine at all and my GoldenImage drive reads but is problematic to writes or format. The next months I thing, I'll haven't working disk drive for my machines. What we can do for that?
