Kickstart 3.1 looooong boot time
« on: June 24, 2006, 10:38:10 AM »
Hi,

I've recently brought an A1200 with the ambitions of re-living my wasted teenage years with a kickass upgraded Amiga 1200 that I could never afford at the time.

I've upgraded the ROMs to v3.1 and noticed a huge difference in boot time, with v3.0 it was like 8 seconds now with the new 3.1 ROMs it is 35 seconds. Is this normal or have I purchased some dodgy ROMs??

Welcome!

Perfectly normal, the Amiga is looking for a hard disk, hence the delay.

Commodore extended the time in Kickstart 3.1 to accomodate slow starting of certain hard disks.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I'm actually about to buy a hard-drive from your site, if I have one installed and the machine finds it will this speed up the boot time?

Also, when I finally add an accelerator and more RAM will this speed up the boot process?

A standard amiga 1200 with a hard drive will boot OS 3.1 in under 10 seconds if memory serves me correctly, this goes down to 5 or 6 seconds if you have an 030 card :)

I think you should find that installing a hard disk will dramatically[/i] speed up the boot time. :-)

When you get Workbench 3.1 installed, the Amiga will boot to your desktop literally in a matter of seconds from turning the machine on.

I experienced the same behaviour when upgrading my A4000 to ROM 3.1 and disconected my hard disk - the machine runs around in circles for about 35 seconds looking for a hard disk before kicking the bucket and putting up the "insert floppy" screen. :-)

I think as long as *something* is on the IDE channel, there's no delay.

Also, this should only be on powering up the machine, all subsequent reboots should be as quick as normal.
