« on: June 23, 2006, 02:05:02 PM »
What is the best joystick/gamepad for the Amiga that would be available in the US.

What game systems joysticks are compat? I know C64 ones are.

If anyone knows someone or has one forsale let me know.

you can buy a joystick or gamepad for the Sega Genesis or mastersystem...there are lot of models and
they are 100% compatibles with the Amiga and C64

I use a Megadrive (Genesis) pad myself.

Although I wouldn't say 100% compatible... you can't use buttons C or Start unless you swap over pins 6 and 9!

The CD32 joypad is the best to own depending what Amiga you got.if you have an AGA Amiga, then some games may support it...............if not..........get a 6 button Sega Genesis Pad..........3 button and Master system joypads work fine too.........but I hear if you have the 6 button one.........if you swap pins 6 and 9, it becomes a full CD32 pad!

Anyone Tried that?

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

I think some of the GameStop stores still carry several models of the Sega game pad.  Other game trading store may carry them as well.  As for compatibility, only the B button works as Fire, usually without rapid fire.  There is a modififcation, like listed above, where pins 5 & 7 are swapped in the controller and a 470 ohm resistor is added between 5 & 7.  This enables all of the functions.  Then you have to find games that utilize all buttons, like ADoom.  This modification is in fact from the ADOOM.README file, which is available on Aminet.  Check it out!

The zipstick can  ;-)
I still have my old zipstick and it works just fine today. The design was pretty similar in itself, but what i did not like about the competition pro was the lack of microswitches in the buttons and the buttons themself had a tendency to get stuck after a few years of usage.
Also my hand get tired out more using the competition pro due to stronger resistance. This is not always a good thing when it comes to games like dirty moves and similar  :-D
But when it comes to look and such, then the competition pro beats the zipstick. The joystick itself also feels a tad more robust with the exception of the buttons.

Although I don't know what's available in the US, it's never been a big hassle for me to order Amiga stuff from Europe (I'm all the way down in Australia), if you don't mind waiting a few weeks.

In any case, the best control pad ever is the Competition Pro CD32 control pad. It has all the CD32 buttons, very nice sizes and layout, beautiful D-pad, auto and turbo fire switches for all the buttons, plus a slow-motion switch for the play/pause button. The feel of the pad is extremely comfortable, just like the original MegaDrive/Genesis 3-button pad (before it the tiny little 6-button one).

If these pads are too hard to find, there is a Polish group who are making new CD32 replacement pads, called the Boomerang CD32 Controller, which is the same shape as the 3-button MegaDrive/Genesis pad also, but using a layout more similar to the 3-button MD/G layout than the SNES-style CD32 layout, although it DOES have all seven CD32 buttons (four face, two shoulder, one play/pause). It also has a joystick and ball attachment for the D-pad, which is kinda cool I guess. Here's a link to the shop selling them, or they're available on eBay - http://www.efunzine.com/efnz.php?a=pow&id=501&ra=pro&rid=501&sid=19dd9481b01f72ef924e6cfdff3dce9c

Now, if you prefer joysticks, there are plenty to choose from and it's all a matter of personal preference and taste I guess. Personally, if I were to get a traditional single-hand joystick (non-arcade style) I'd want it to have 2-button support, as a LOT of Amiga games use a second button. Any joystick with Sega Master System compatibility will be fine. Usually button 1 is the trigger and button 2 is the thumb button, or the other way around.

And as stated before, any Sega Master System or MegaDrive/Genesis pad will work as a 2-button pad on an Amiga, although I would love to test this theory about turning one into a CD32 compatible pad. Has anyone done this, or does anyone have instructions on how to do it? I have a bunch of 6-button MegaDrive pads, and a couple of CD32s to test them on.
Amiga user forever.

it's very robust, but a little discomfort. I have one and I prefer a pad, or of sega or cd32
