Thanks for the advice all,, Apple or peecee? Apple wins!
« on: June 12, 2006, 04:48:16 PM »
Okay folks.
Have a sis-in-law asking if she ought to get my bro an Apple or a peecee.

What ought to be the advice I give, pro and con? I can think of a few obvious ones (virii and other security thingies).
Personally, I'm leaning toward a Mac, but convince me!

Thanks!

Apple works out of the box, is fast stable and secure, doesn't suffer viruses or spyware, has an attractive and functional OS which is as simple or as complex as you want it to be.

Assuming she will be running Windows on the PC, you can pretty much assume the exact opposite of the above IMO.

Get a Mac :-)

It really depends on what she plans to do with the computer. The Mac has an all around better OS and in my opinion much better for surfing the net as there are less viruses. Apple has great coustomer suport and tends to have alot more stable OS. The PC on the other hand will run alot more software and hardware. It also is usualy cheaper and definatly easer to get.
Amiga 2000HD Indivision ECS
Amiga 4000D towerised OS 3.1 and 3.9 on CF cards
Indivision AGA, Mediator 4000
Video Toaster 4000 Flyer v4.3 Millenium.
202gig of video drive space & 5gig audio.

Not sure I would agree actually.

While there is a greater volume of software available for Windows, most of it is crap. I have never failed to find a Mac alternative for a piece of Windows software, and on the whole, Mac software (even freeware) is of a much higher standard than Windows software.

It may take a little more hunting to find a Mac alternative, but web sites like versiontracker.com and macupdate.com are excellent repositories of Mac software.

Also, while some hardware may not be compatible with the Mac, you can be sure that the hardware which is compatible will work flawlessly, with none of the headaches oftn associated with installing new hardware on Windows.

In no way can I say get a windows machine; however I own a mac and I love it.  But don't think of it as a be all end all, true it does well on the internet especially as far as viruses are concerned, however I use a combination of firefox safari and opera to be able to surf everything I want and then its probably 95% compatible with sites out there.  But the most important annoyance is compatiblity with microsoft standards, standards that are used everywhere unfortunetly, try to get it to play an AVI thats isn't 5 years old. It will only be running windows media 9 so it is definitly lacking in this regard.  Also recently I upgraded quicktime (the new bloated version) and the timing for internet streams are off and in order to play a video I must pause it and let the buffer go forward but must play the video before its fininshed loading?  So as far as working out of the box, I would say it does better than anything we are used to but its far from what should be, in a product that is praised no end as the be all end all, and In my experience thats just not the case.  Mac osX is really cool though a big upgrade fom os9 Right now I would say its the best of whats available
Couldn\\\'t afford an amiga then can\\\'t afford one now.

Apple make the best computers available today, and they have the best OS.   The only time I use Windows is for playing Counterstrike and Far Cry.  To me, a choice between a Mac, and a Windows PC ain't no choice at all.  It's like choosing between a Ferrari and a Skoda. :-)

It's a cliche I know, but on Mac things 'just work'.  Wi-fi, Bluetooth, USB devices, digital cameras, everything I plugged in, Mac just recognises it, and it starts working right away, no need to search for a driver CD or install any proprietary software or restart the computer, it's just there.

If you are getting an Intel Mac you can also run bootcamp (I think it is still a free download on Apple's site) & boot xp if you really want to.

Install Ubuntu or similar linux release.
XP or similar for games.
My mac Quadra is not in use but my Amigas is.
How much i would like to recomend an Amiga,i just cant :-(
Stick with a decent linux release and you will have no problems whatsoever.

This is all my humble opinion, always get another point of view.

get a pc they are considerably faster, they are very secure and have excellent support. (dell would be my top pick) thay have a fast modern os that is much more secure and stable than mac heads want you to beleive. also contrary to popular belief macs do have their share of viruses and spyware. and clock for clock (dollar for dollar) are faster for web browsing etc.
macs are very decent machines but even apple has seen the light and switched over to x86 arch. apple is now just anouther alternate os company. and with standard x86 systems you have your pick of alternate os's with no kludge factor. (apple doesnt want you to run anyone elses os on their hardware) (no microsoft doesnt either but they dont build the hardware and cant make it their own way)
Oh yeah?!?
Well your stupid bit is set,
and its read only!

the mac is a pc today annyways and fully oprimised for its super good osx as well as fully usable with winxp so go for the mac .. I want a new mac annyways sold my mac mini regrath like ,,, the new dual cores seem so much more fun than the ppc one i had ..

And they look cool easy to just plug and play and not as easy to make it go sluggish after a session of internet browsing like the pc
