C64 on Amiga?
« on: May 19, 2006, 02:10:12 PM »
I've been a fan of Commodore's in many years, and enjoy using my Amiga's and my C64.
However, the sound module on my C64 has given up, so i can't hear those lovely tunes anymore.. :-(
I've been googlin' around for some emulator stuff, and read somewhere that it is made emulators for the C64 which works on the Amiga. My question is:
What emulator is the best?
What sort of hardware do i need do run it? Is it going to be slow on a stock A1200?
Can the emulator run d64-images? Or is it really hard work to get this up and going?

Best regards,
Sigurd
Currently owning: A couple of Windoze pc´s, A 24" Imac, 3 A500, 1 A1200 with A Blizzard 1230 IV, CF-Hd ++ and a C64.   8-)

I can't say what is the better emulator, i don't use a C64 emulator on my Amiga since years, but forget to use on a plain A1200, i remember that existing emulators some years ago didn't work at full speed on my A1200 with a Blizzard 030 / 50 Mhz. And about d64 images, i think that some emulator works with d64 images. Try to search on aminet on misc/emu, exist different emulators of C64.

There are 2 C64 emulators I use on my Amiga.
Frodo and Magic 64.

Magic 64 needs a keyfile or it goes off after 10 mins. Sadly your chances of getting this are minimal as the site it tells you to go to is a porn site now. There is a version that wont go off but it has no sound. This is fast and most formats work (d64,T64, P00 etc). However some D64's use the 1541's memory so wont work without a real Commodore drive.

The one I use most is Frodo it plays D64s and T64s but not the other formats. A way round this is to get a program that makes D64 disks and put all non D64's on a D64 file.
Version 2 is faster than the newest version but it has problems running some D64's (same problem as magic)

Both Emulators need a sid library. I find the best one to use is 6581sid.library. It is faster than the Playsid.library.
They also need expansions. I use an 060 with 64mb ram. For frodo to get good speed (2x or 3x) I use Blazewcp and Fblit. A graphics card is needed for full speed but theres little difference.

@foleyjo

Frodo 4.x has better compatibility but it is also slower. There is also VICE being ported (in fact already ported).

It is not available to the public yet. I dont know how fast it is but I'd assume 060/50 is needed.

When it is possible, maybe you could let us know some more about Vice. It sounds very interesting.
