quick newbie question
« on: July 26, 2006, 04:41:02 PM »
Does the A3000 require a CPU board in the Fast slot in order to run?   Or does the A3000 have an on-board processor on the motherboard, and the fast slot would be just for an upgrade?

Just curious, I have an amiga3000 with an empty fast slot, and I'm wondering if that's why it won't boot.

Thanks!

Jeremy

the 3000 has a cpu on the motherboard it is a 68030 with a 68882 math chip.
the only way the cpu slot would keep the system from running is if you had the jumpers set wrong on the motherboard. jumpers for cpu clock and other things need to be set.

here is a link to a site the has tons of info. if you click on models and then on a3000 there is a page that has info on the 3000 including jumper settings.
Oh yeah?!?
Well your stupid bit is set,
and its read only!

Nope. That Fast slot is for that 68060 accelerator you're planning to get in the future.  :-D

It's not booting for another reason. What are your symptoms?

Hey guys,   thanks for the tips!!  I've kinda blindly worked with the jumpers and I've got the machine now to the point where it gives me the amiga checkmark asking me to insert a disk....

So, here's where I'm at.  The machine does have a hard drive in it, and I was assuming it would boot from the hard drive.   I did see it boot from the hard drive once during my several power on/power off's, but haven't seen it boot from the hard drive since.  I've tried feeding it several disks,  mostly games, but one of them was a workbench 2.0 disk, and it acts like it' trying to read, the screen goes blank (purple) then it drops me back to the amiga checkmark.    what's going on here?  Any ideas?

Thanks!

Jeremy

Make sure that all socketed chips are seated firmly.

Give the floppy drive a good alcohol cleaning. That got my internal A3000 FD to read disks properly.

Boot from the Install disk, and run HDToolBox and check to see if the HD is ok. That's a good start.

Alright, I am able to get the 3000 to boot from the HD when I turn the machine on holding both mouse buttons to enter the "bios".   I choose the hard drive, and the thing boots just fine...

Now, here's my newest dillema... It still won't boot from any floppy disks, and I also have attached a working external amiga floppy drive, and it won't boot from that either.   When I'm in workbench, if I put a floppy disk into either drive, it gives me  "DF0:???"  or "DF2:???"  depending on the drive I'm using.   SO, it's not able to read disks.  I know the disks are good because they work fine in my Amiga 500.

Any thoughts on what could be going on here?

Thanks!!!

Jeremy

Well, on another post, a malfunctioning floppy drive on a 2000 was due to a bad CIA chip, so perhaps thats the problem.

I was using a workbench 2.0 disk, and also tried some amiga games... like Prince of Persia, and Loom.  both legit authentic disks, not copies or pirates or anything.  they just wouldn't read.
