A500 expansion taken-need CD Rom
« on: May 05, 2006, 05:01:07 AM »
How do you get an Amiga 500 to boot off the hard drive hooked up to the expansion slot, while also using a Commodore A570 CD Rom?  Or am I in trouble?

Going to need some more details. What expansion slot?
If you've added a SCSI controller to the A570, a properly prepared RDB disk with a bootable partition and installed system should do the trick.

I think he means the side expansion slot on the A500. :-)

as Matt said though, you can add an SCSI interface to the A570 or use a harddrive controller with an external SCSI CD-Rom. (The down side of the SCSI CD-Rom is that you wont have a CDTV compatiable unit.

Other than that most none Commodore SCSI controllers did have a pass-through, so just dont use an A590.

....or choose a hard drive expansion unit that has a pass through connection. If I remember right, the Supra units do this.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

Thanks guys.  After reading my post, I realize I wasn't all too clear.  But I got my answer :)

On a side note, whats the fastest CD ROM drive that should be run on an A500?  I know the A570 is a 1x drive, I would think that the computer could handle a slightly higher speed without any ill effects.

seeing as cdrom drives are typically slower than hard drives & the cdrom & hardrive will not go any faster than the interface. i would assume you could put most any speed cdrom drive with no ill effects.

i probably wouldn't put more than 8x though(ay more seems too much like overkill) but if you get it cheap. :-D
The only stupid question is a question not asked.

Win•dows: n. A thirty-two bit extension and graphical shell to a sixteen-bit patch to an eight-bit operating system originally coded for a four-bit microprocessor which was written by a two-bit company that can\'t stand one bit of competition.
