A couple of questions about openpci.library
« on: May 08, 2006, 08:48:52 AM »
I have an A1200 with a Mediator. I'm currently using a Voodoo 3000 and a Realtek ethernet card, both of which work well.

On the openpci.library home page, it says that USB support is cancelled, but further down the page it says that it supports USB. Can anyone confirm whether or not the openpci.library supports USB cards? If so, which chipsets can I use?

Also, does openpci.library live happily with Elbox's pci.library? IOW, will the system be able to distinguish between devices which use pci.library (Voodoo) and those which use openpci.library (network/USB).

Cheers

OpenPCI does, indeed, use USB. I use it on my Amithlon box. You'll need arakattack from aminet. Don't ask me for the link, 'cos I'm *WAY* too tired, Mate. Just download all the sh!t they've got posted on the OpenPCI page.

BTW, did you sort out your Shapeshifter problem??  :-(

openpci.library on classic miggies it's just a wrapper to the real [pci/prometheus/cyberppc].library so you will be able to have both kind of drivers working :-)

Thanks guys for answering both of my questions between you :-) Will download all the stuff tonight. Just need to know what chipsets I can use - I assume it's in the docs?

@Methuselas
I never got ShapeShifter to work (still hangs/reboots the miggy when I boot MacOS8.1). Interestingly I did manage to get Basilisk to boot with the 1MB ROM, but it did the same thing when I booted 8.1!  :-?

@Moto

Sh!t....I wish I could help, but I don't have OS8.1 I'll see if I can't figure out something. I gotta get some sleep, though. I'm knackered.

Haha, well we were here first, you lot buggered off and decided to live in your own time zone  :-P  Long live Her Majesty's Greenwich Mean Time!  :-D

If I could try MacOS 8.0 that would be cool, or maybe get a copy of 8.1 to you since you already know your Basilisk works with 8.0? That would confirm once and for all whether the problem is 8.1.

Can anyone who has used openpci.library with a USB card give any idea of performance/reliability? It seems to be much cheaper to go for the OpenPCI solution than the Spider USB card:

SPIDER USB: Card+P&P £49.36 + Poseidon £26.00 = £75.36
OPENPCI: Card £12.99 + Poseidon £26.00 + ArakAttack £13.69 = £52.68

If the OpenPCI solution is just as good as Spider then I'll go for that. I don't care about USB 2.0. 1.1 will be enough.

I couldn't get ArackAttack to work with USB Card+Poseidon+Openpci.libarary in my Mediator. Don't know of anyone who have been able to do so either.

get spiderusb.... too much hackish software for the openpci solution and I doubt it works.. lol
several ppl have tried with g-rex1200 with no results...
since u have mediator, get the spider card to be on the safeside.... or one of those new subways... :-D

Well I'm gonna get a cheap PCI USB card from Maplin and try it out. If it doesn't work then I can just take it back. Don't really want to spend 75 quid on the Spider...

i have read somewhere that there was a conflict between openpci author and elbox so there isn't combatibility with mediator. i have try openpci with a cheap (9euro) usb2 card on prometheus and almost work... all drivers could ''see'' each other but because of dma issues of prometheus never arrived at a happy end.

-edit-
Nickman (from an other post):
Atleast pciscan that comes with the archive works ok with my mediator and lists all the cards etc. And i have tried ArackAttack and a noname USB card. Poseidon sees the card but i can't get it to work. But as i haven't got another card to try with i can't verify if it's the card or the mediator driver that is the problem.

salteadorn (an other one post):
The OpenPCi lib "does" not work well with Mediator. I have already also made tests with diverse USB cards(a NEC USB 2.0 among them) and none has worked with the OpenPci and ArakAtack.

If i am going to have bugs on my system,
at least let me keep the latest versions.

Well, it appears you were correct. I went to Maplin and bought a PCI card, and installed it in my Mediator. PCIInfo saw it correctly, so I installed openpci.library, Poseidon, and ArakAttack. I ran Trident, added five OpenUSB devices with units 0 to 4 (as advised by ArakAttack install document), pressed online, and just got this:

Quote
0-OpenUSB.device: OpenUSB.device 1.10 (3.5.2004) ©2004 by Guido Mersmann
10-OpenUSB.device: Unable to open 'openpci.library' V2.0!
 0-OpenUSB.device: OpenUSB.device 1.10 (3.5.2004) ©2004 by Guido Mersmann
10-OpenUSB.device: Unable to open 'openpci.library' V2.0!
20-poseidon.library: Opening DEVS:USBHardware/OpenUSB.device unit 0 failed device/unit failed to open (-1).

This was repeated for each device. :-(
