monitor & hdd ???

hi all just got my A1200 and you can get a monitor lead off ebay i was just wondering if any one had a wireing diergram to make one ?? and can i fit any size hard drive in my 1200 could i put 20 gb in with out doing anything??

If it is a 1084 which model?

We will need to know which connector you will need to make.

You could put a 20Gb HD and use 4Gb of it immediatly after running HD Tools on the WB 3 HD install disk.
Workbench 3.1 and below can only support up to 4 gig (which was a lot in those days!) You will need to either upgrade to workbench 3.5/3.9 or I have heard that you can download a fastfilesystem replacement/upgrade from Aminet.

if you put a 2.5 inch drive you just want this cable. if you want to put a 3.5 inch drive you want this cable or that. with the later you can add and an external cdrom too. and of course cables to power up the drives. the safest way is to power the drives direct from the external psu, but if you have only the original a1200 one, better find some other for external use.

Hi,
"VGA" and "SVGA" are not standard mode for AMiga (execpted some rare case..), because they use at least 31KHz mode.
Amiga was made for TV use 15 Khz.
You'll need a SD/FF to convert the 15 Khz RGB from the Amiga output to a 31 Khz for VGA monitor
This kind of device cost around 100e.

If you have the right connectors
23 pin amiga monitor connector and a 15 pin vga and some wires you can construct your own cable up very cheaply. I have done this and rigged it up to an old Acorn multisync with no probs. I should think you could do the same if you are handy with a soldering iron and don't wish to play floppy bootable games.

You might be able to find the approriate bits at maplins, but to be honest it would be just as cheap (and safer) to buy the cable ready-made.

this ebay auction accepts paypal and is in the UK.  I've seen them going for £5 plus postage before.

there are schematics on aminet for adapters, you have to add a chip (ttl buffer?) to prevent the the display chips for trying to genlock and get fried. just putting the right wires accross can result in damage from what ive heard. i got a commodore adapter back when i had my 1200 and it sucked really really freaking bad until i got an nec3d monitor that can sync to normal amiga rates.

If you want to use a standard vga/svga monitor with anything besides WB and software running under Workbench, then you will need to get something called a flicker fixer. Normal pc monitors are not able display the frequensies required by the amiga, unless you get a flicker fixed that doubles the refresh rate. You can get one from here: http://amigakit.com/

The a1200 is compitable with any standard 2.5 laptop HD.

I had a direct RGB->VGA converter without any extra components and it ran fine for years. The A1200 mobo is still fine, aswell as the 3 monitors I used it with.

My understanding is that the extra circuitry will allow use of genlock, and that it's not really required if genlock is not used (99.9% of cases anyway).
