A2000 memory...please educate me.
« on: April 10, 2006, 02:04:26 PM »
Hello all

I've got an a2000 last revision board with the amiga accelerator i think its an a2630, I also have an 8 up board with 4 megs populated, then an amber flickerfixer scan doubler.  This configuration worked well until I added a cybrgraphics 64 3d card.  The card made the 8 up card fail which then made my miggy have too little ram for os 3.9, so It runs too slow, worse yet there isn't enough memory to properly run any screen modes on the cybrgraphics card.  So I read briefly somewhere about the total memory an a2000 can handle across its bus more than likely my problem.  My question is in order to solve this problem it looks like I'm going to have to get an accelerator that comes equiped with at least 32megs of ram, and get rid of the 8 up board all together.  Any other ideas? And also can anyone enlighten me on the ram limitations of the a2000? Also what is the most ram you can equip an a2000 with?

 :-?  :-?

You could try and get a A2362 board which is a memory card for the A2630. (It accepts 112Mb of memory I think, something like that anyway)
One question though, How much memory does your A2630 have? it would have enough to start 3.9 on its own. :-/

Oh PS:
You can have up to 8Mb of memory on the Zorro 2 bus space, that includes whats on your graphics card. I belive the A2630 autoconfigs the memory into the 32bit space not used by the A2K but if it doesnt you have to add that to the total.

there are 4 megs on the accelerator and 4 megs on the graphics card perhaps this is the problem? how do you go about putting the ram into the 32bit space?

I dont know, I would have thought it would have been in 32bit space already.
You say you have an 8up board with 4MB, a graphics card with 4MB but the graphics card would also autoconfig a second card for IO operations at 64Kb, I would think thats the problem.
If it is Im sure you could remove the 8up board and it would work fine and still have more than enough memory for os3.9
If so you could remove 1Mb from the 8up card and boot it at 3Mb (or if not, 2Mb)

It boots into os3.9; the problem is that I do not get any screenmodes due to a lack of memory error, then like an idiot I overroad the settings and forced a screenmode to be saved so now I get a blank screen so I'm eventually going to have to redo my hard drive, but I really think its a memory issue because now with the 8up baord gone I have like 8 megs of ram or something like that, I used to have 12.  Anyway I do not understand enough about the memory configurations in an a2000 to know for sure if this is my problem but the eror message I was getting, when trying screenmodes, points me that way.

There is no need to do a reinstall, just hold both mouse buttons down on restart, go do dh0:devs/monitors and move the cybergraphics or picasso monitor out of the monitors folder, reboot and you should be fine. :-)

As for you not having enough memory to open the screen... cant help to much with that.
As I said, try removing one or two banks of memory chips from the 8up board and see if that helps. (Its a bit of hard work as all of the chips are DIP's)

You could just put up with 256 colours at 800x600 for a while, you never know, you might grow to like it. ;-)

A2632 cards are rare so if may be easier to find a CPU upgrade that can take more memory.. like most/all 040 cards.
Not much in the way of A2000 CPU upgrades on ebay at the moment though. :-/

I would be happy with 256 @ 800x600 but it won't display that, but by getting my miggy back up the way you told me will allow me to play around as far as dips go if you put a wire tie under the chip and bend both ends up they pop right out just gotta take your time.  Thank you at least you helped me get my miggy back!

If workbench used to indicate 12MB of RAM then the accelerator can't be a plain A2630 since the memory on the A2630 goes into zorro2 space (limitted to 8MB).
