I have just found the following product on e-bay and i was wondering whether there is sth like that available commercially or one could make it by himself. Is it really possible in a decent way? Anyway, it sounds like a good, cheap and clever idea for anyone who doesn't need to follow the difficult way in order to install a hard disk in his miggy. I'd like the suggestions of more experienced amigans on this:

Much to expensive. You can buy one of these Adapter: IDE/CF Adapter. But you need a 44 to 40 IDE cable + a power splitter and a CF card.

Yeah, they aren't that rare anymore.  I agree that is too much money.  Plus I really dislike the people who sell "pre-installed" drives without proper licensing.....

This is a "good" idea, but there are MUCH cleaner ways to do it for a A1200.

This is my A4000 mobo...

They also make them in 44 pin versions so they would be PERFECT for the A1200 or A600.

Now getting your hands on one is a different story...

Do a google search around and see if you can find a seller, I got mine trough a friend who works for simple tech... :-D

You should be aware the flash cards are somewhat limited to as how many write cycles they stand, depending on make and model...

Yeah, so better get a microdrive instead of a CF card. Cost a little bit more and is not 100% silent (but you really have to prick up your ears to hear something) but it will last longer in the end.

44-pin flash IDE adapters cost about $20 in the US.  I've seen one as cheap as $14, but even though it was 44-pin, it wasn't self-powered.

I almost bought one of these:  Transcend.  Read and write speed of a good flash card should max out the stock IDE controller in an A1200/4000.

I opted to get a 20GB Hitchachi Travelstar instead.  I had to drill some new holes in my original hard drive bracket (which was for an 85MB Maxtor), but it was worth it.  The spin is so quiet, I can't hear it at all over the whine of my monitor, though I do occasionally hear the heads park.  The drive itself is slightly thinner than the IDE plug!  Man, these things are small.  And, yes, with a real HD you don't have to worry about write cycles.

I don't get the appeal of Microdrives.  Laptop drives are friggin' small these days, power efficient, and are very, very quiet if you get one with fluid bearings, which is pretty much all of them, now.  I love this Travelstar.
