How to know if my PPC is dead????

As you may have seen in my other lately posts, i was having all kind of trouble (see "A very sad sad day for me", thread)

My PPC card, was still working, since i tested in other friends machine

But now, nothing, when i switch the machine, i get nothing

How can i no for sure if its working or not?
Pressing ESC key durrin bootup shows me nothing but a black screen...any ideas??

First thing you should do is to make sure it is actually the PPC card or not that is causing the problems. So I would add a regular processor card in your machine and if it than works it should be a problem with your PPC card.

If you're sure the computer itself works fine than make sure you've pressed the PPC card in properly. If possible verify the memory chips on another card first to elliminate the memory problems. (simms) Than also check the jumper settings.

If you turn the computer on, watch on the keyboard to see if the caps-lock is flashing, hear the HD spinn on, the floppy click and than possibly see the monitor sync. If all that works try holding both mouse buttons at bootup and click on the device tab. if you get this far, atleast some of the card is working.

I'm not sure if the 680x0 is doing all of the startup.

Make sure the CONFIG jumper on your MEDIATOR is set to open for the PPC card.  Unlike the apollo 1240 (which needs it to be set to closed) the jumper should be set to open with the BPPC

I had a similar problem with a ppc card a few months back - had fried a motherboard with the PPC attached, when I plugged the PPC into another motherboard - signal was supplied to the monitor, however just a black screen, no sign of boot up.

Tried it again many times over the next few days - same lack of results.

Mourned the passing of another PPC, I had just about decided to give up on my amiga days and sell everything.

A few weeks down the line thought I'd try it again - worked fine, and have had no problems ever since.  I figure it just felt it wasn't getting the respect it deserved, and decided to go on strike for a bit.
Since then I have also upgraded to 060 (from 040), and plan to add scsi (needs time and access to hot air soldering facilities - I'm working on it).

Hope yours comes back to life too.

Have just read through your 'Sad day' posting again - :-(  That would have been it for me, I wouldn't have been able to carry on I don't think - glad most of it is working again :-)

btw - 040 PPC are really power-hungry - have you fed extra power to the motherboard using the floppy header on the motherboard?  

Have you tried doing a soft reset a few times (Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga) to see if it boots after that?  I also had a ppc which needed a soft reset to get going.

Thats a good idea, when I start my Amiga for the first time each day, I get nothing but a black screen on my GFX monitor and an error message on amiga monitor (multi-changer error) and as soon as I do a soft reset it works fine all day long!

consider too that after pressing esc the monitor's output turns to 31khz. press space to turn it back to 15khz, of course if you make this test to a 15khz monitor or a tv set.
