Narrow escape for my Voodoo

I got a right angled PCI connector today as part of my "A1200 in an A1000 case" project  which will allow my Voodoo to lie parallel to the motherboard. I plugged it in just to make sure it works and powered up. The PSU fan spun up, then the system switched itself off. I disconnected the graphics card and realised that the PCI connector is symmetrical, i.e. with a notch at both ends, and I had connected it the wrong way round  :-o  I though best case scenario I had killed the card, worse case I had killed my Mediator, suicide case scenario I had killed both + my Blizzard 1260.

Fortunately when I connected the Voodoo back directly to my Mediator it all started up ok. Phew!

Another lesson learned :roll:

A1200PT, mediator c/w voodoo 3 2000, sb128, 60G HDD,OS3.9,LITEON CDR, nec 4x4 changer,External Scan Doubler,Cocolino adapter,PS2 keyboard adaptor.

Morphos 2.6, mini mac g4 @ 1.25ghz.

I've also been quite lucky when assemling Amiga hardware upside down, wrong way around etc
Amiga hardware is tough...only thing which will make a deadly blow for sure is static electricity  :-o

I've never been caught out by static electricity. Though I'm always careful to discharge myself before handling my equipment :lol:

I also have made a few mistakes with hardware like when i first started buying hardware to upgrade my amiga.I bought a ide bufferd interface and i cant remember why now but i had to strip my amiga down.So anyways to cut it short i plugged the ide cable in the wrong way and when i switched the amiga on i seen the cable burn infront of my eyes lol...It was like when you see them light a fuse in a cartoon as it was travelling up the cable heading towards my hard drive..Well yeah it toasted my bufferd interface lol oh well nevermind...

Yeah, burnt out a 25-pin to 50-pin scsi interface the other day by plugging the bugger in the wrong way.  
Nothing makes you move faster than seeing a red-orange flickering glow coming from inside your amiga tower.

Killed a BPPC once by plugging the 12v lead into the fan header instead of the 5v one - same glow, same smell, same feeling (slightly more painful due to being worth more).

btw - surely it is symmetrical since it is just passing all the lines straight through - that way you COULD use it either way round - it's only if you plug the voodoo card in back to front that you would do any damage (probably, not going to experiment though :-) )

Sorry, I was a little unclear:
When I said the wrong way round I meant the pci adapter could probably go in either way allowing the voodoo card to either lean to the left, or lean to the right - in either scenario the lines would pass staight through and the card would work.

By back to front I was referring to the voodoo card - in this case the vga port would be pointing towards the front of the amiga, and probably this would lead to an undesirable burning smell, and the sound of an amigan going "oshitoshitoshitoshitoshitoshitoshitoshitoshitoshitoshit"

It does mean that for your project you could have two pci slots leaning left, and two pci slots leaning right thus:

Oh I see what you mean now. Well the connector on the PCI right angle adapter is not symmetrical so it will only go in one way round. Unfortunately Maplin have discontinued the one that goes in the opposite direction so I'm stuck with one PCI slot for now :-(

I did think it was strange that the VGA connector was facing towards the front of the tower, but assumed it was just the way the adapter works :roll: Fortunately no harm was done!
