1200 towers????
« on: March 03, 2006, 01:12:35 PM »
i would love to put my 1200 into a tower. But 250.00 is a lot of money for sheet metal. the only difference in a amiga tower and a pee cee tower is the back plate specially cut for the amoga 1200 motherboard. if one were to get a templet of the back of a 1200 motherboard drawn to scale, it would seem thay perhaps a mfg who makes towers and cases would cut the plates as needed.
just how many people would buy a plate for the back of a tower and install it, in a tower case of there own. the back plate of the tower is rivited in about 4 spots on each side of the case back a chisel would cut the rivits leaving a good hole to install screws securing the case back. just my two cents worth.
what do you think??? perhaps someone would have the tools and expertise to do the job themselves???? :-D  :-?

i neglected to say i am in the usa

I would be thrilled at the project but once it was completed, it would just sit and collect dust.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as replacing the backplate. ATX towers have a small rectangular backplate which presses in to the back of the case. These are easily replaceable. However, this backplate is too short to fit all of the Amiga's ports on it. Therefore the entire back of the case would have to be removed and a new one fitted.

It would be impossible to manufacture a standard replacement back panel as all ATX cases are different. Also, the back panel would probably be welded or riveted, or worse the entire tower would be a single sheet of metal which is folded to make the correct shape. This would make removal of the back of the tower impossible without damaging the rest of the case.

Most people have I think. Converting a tower just needs patience and some good thoughts on how to arrange the inside. A Dremel helps too :-D

more skill to fit everything you'd have in a boggy PC tower inside a desktop. ;-)

BTW, would a mediator fit inside a desktop? i'd be in the market for a mediator like board that fitted in an A1200 desktop, but had the USB/Sound/GFX/TV tuner/ethernet controller onboard instead of PCI slots...

sorry, off topic....  :-D

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

I agree that getting a good tower is not cheap. Some older towers such as the EZ Mk5 are not suitable for Mediator, having been designed with ZIV in mind (or a PC MOBO). This can make life real hard. Converting a PC tower yourself is OK but tends not to be as tidy as a made to measure Amiga tower.
My advice, keep a close eye on ebay. I got an elbox/winner tower for €127 with 1200MOBO, fastIDE, silver surfer, CDROM and 2 (albeit, small) HDD's.
Not bad eh?

And keep an eye on that doctorq fella, he's allways selling stuff and is a genuine easy bloke to deal with. ;-)
Falling into a dark and red rage.

Hi,

I have a Power Tower which has recently housed a 1200 mediator board plus all the add ons. I now no longer need it. Postage in the UK is 15 pounds, so if you want to make me an offer on top of that i will be happy to post it. I accept Paypal to make things easier if you prefer.

Also, i have six 9.1gig scsi hard drives for sale. They are scsi II (50 pin), make me offers for the lot or individually, they need to go. Thanks all. I live in the UK for those interested.

Cheers.

i would make you an offer but i am sure postage to the usa would be hefty because of the weight of the tower. thanks for your offer.

Try to catch a Micronik Infintiv Tower on Ebay.de (don't take the original PSU  ;-)  ), they can fit most of buses for the A1200.  :rtfm:   (see amiga-hardware)

I can't think of any reason to buy an Infinitiv tower case, except maybe for the fact that it is plastic which might keep shipping costs low. But then again, the chance of it arriving in one piece is small.
These cases, although they look OK are possibly the worst thing ever made for the Amiga, the case completely assembled is still very unstable, making even picking the thing up a horror!
