Any security benefit to using WinUAE?
« on: February 01, 2006, 07:17:27 PM »
I was wondering, are there any benefits in terms of security to using WinUAE to do all your web browsing and net-related stuff?  As in, would there be less of a chance of getting viruses, as the virus executables wouldn't run in the emulator?  Although Windows would still be running in the background, but would have no reason to execute any viruses downloaded?  I also wonder if this makes sense, probably not.   :roll:

i think you can safely browse whatever page in Winuae and Ibrowse .. I use IB if i have to go to some page I think looks sketchy (spyware etc.)... never had any problems.

Try this instead:

http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/vm/browserapp.html

It runs inside the free VMWare player, and you can set it to not remember any of your personal info, etc between runs.

Not as cool as using UAE, for sure, but you get a modern browser (Firefox 1.5) and it's easier to set up.  Just download the player and the browser appliance image!

@merc

absolutely 100% agree. Vmware is the best way to go in this regard. You will get a fast modern browser and os in a cage and you can save state before you start and revert back to a clean state as often as you like, and the revert process is very fast.

Security wise,  i'm not aware of anybody breaking out of the vmware vm. I think there is a strong possibility of breaking out of the UAE vm and taking over the process.
