Microbotics VXL-30 Accelerator for the AMIGA 500
« on: January 20, 2006, 02:02:22 AM »
Has anyone had one of these accelerators in their A500+ as I have a few questions - Is it possible to boot with just the 68000 (for software compatibility) without the use of the workbench? I also have a SCRAM 500. Will I still have use of my fast ram in the SCRAM? I have also heard there is an issue with the 2.04 Kickstart Rom. Is this true?

I have it in my A500+.
It works fine, but I've made a few modifications to make sure the connection to the 68k socket was extra good.
First of all, I've removed the original socket and placed a MACH socket and now the accelerator card can never pop out as it's tightly inserted into the superious 68k socket socket.

Secondly, there is a part that is soldered onto the A500+ motherboard (a blue capacitor, IIRC) that is sort of too tall in order for this rather large card to fit. I'm not sure if this is the case with all A500 motherboards or just with A500+. It needs to be desoldered and soldered paralel with the motherboard so that it provides enough clearance space for the VXL to fit in.

I've placed the 2.05 rom into the A500+ rom socket and 3.1 rom into the VXL's own rom socket, and set the jumper on the VXL so that 3.1 rom auto boots, and everything works just fine. No problems at all. I also have the ram attachment for VXL with 2MB of fast ram on it.

Some day I'd like to buy 8MB of ram for it, but finding 1x4m 20-pin ram chips is next to impossible.
