Amiga Games Data
« on: January 13, 2006, 06:54:58 PM »
I've collected a LOT of information from HOL website (EDITED) about Amiga games and put them in .txt file. Here it is for you:

Amiga_games_db.rar

(its on ed2k too)

I also have a massive collection of games boxscans screenshots, etc. The problem is that its 1,6Gb in size..
I have put it on emule, but i'm on veery slow upload (<128Kbit). here are the links anyways

Amiga_games_data.rar

I guess something like this already exists, but still hope someone will find it useful..
 :-)
Better sorry than worry.

So you've leeched the Hall of Light (http://hol.abime.net/) database, you're trying to spread it around and you don't even have the decency to at least mention where you got it from.

You've announced your intentions before in this thread: http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=12185. You also called us thieves after I politely replied to your original post and you mistook another poster as part of the HOL team.

I have a suggestion. Why don't you put in countless hours to research your own data, scan boxes and grab screenshots? Since the first HOL screens were grabbed about seven years ago you should be finished around 2014. Then you can pay for the ad-free web hosting out of your own pocket and not receive a penny in return.

Thanks very much.

yes I did, just the same as you leeched data from Amiga companies, artists, coders, etc..

I'm only doing what you should have done at first, give the people all the data.. you're the one with no decency

oh, and its pretty obvious that its from hol, because I've left cheatcodes in .html, didn't bother with converting. I don't see a point in mentioning hol anyways bacause it would be full of swearing, cursing.. :pissed:

BTW, it seems you registered here just to bich about my posts, cc..

@orange

man why don't you get it ? Yes, the data may belong to everyone, but these guys put an effort to compile it alltogether, and the final product in its compiled form belongs to them, and they can distribute it however they like.  by pissing them off you just disencourage all the future efforts to do something for the amiga community.

that's it, I'm not gonna reply to this s*** anymore.. if you don't like it than JUST DONT f*****g DOWNLOAD it..

I don't think I did anything bad, and if I'm a 'leecher' than I'm proud of it

BTW, I actually learned a bit about C++ programming from making the wget scripts, so it has been educational.. if you thought I didn't learn anything.  :-)

That's just pathetic...how hard would it be to mention in the readme that all the information came from HoL?

ok, but mentionig hol would be provocative, and I have thought about it.. they would be pissed off anyways.. and if it really means something why don't you do it and put the database on some site. I surely don't care..

Edit: OK, README file is updated..
Better sorry than worry.

@orange
you don't seem to understand the difference between research
and plagiarism.

The HOL database represents countless thousands of hours of research, often having to cross reference the information from multiple sources whether they are the in-game credits, those printed in the game manuals as well as magazine reviews and even input from the authors themselves.  This is a huge difference from stealing the data that has been compiled and dumping the data.  The database is desingned to be an online reference and is constantly being updated.

Ok, so you've worked out a way to download the data from the HOL website.  I don't think that it is something that you should have done but there is not much that we can do about it.  However, we request that you do not distribute the the data and image archive.  What you are doing is not much different from distributing pirated software.

If you like the site so much why not contribute like the many contributors that have supported us by scanning and providing us with data.  Point people to the real thing rather than an out-of-date ripped version.

Just wanted to say that HOL is really great :-)

Thanks to all involved.. Cody/EAB gang/Mr Tapper etc :-)

(edit: maybe hol should offer database snapshots like the IMDB, based around some kind of "creative commons" licence. Might help avoid this kind of plagiarism, as people would be able to get the data from the source?)

so sue me.
I never even said that the database is mine, so no its not plagiarism. Besides that data does NOT belong to you.

IIRC, you said that bandwidth was the problem, so maybe my ISP can help you, put a link on your site to the database in .txt format for the visitors that would like to download it. I'll put in your readme file if that is problem.
It would not be a much of a problem to keep it updated, in a remote case you helping out..
Better sorry than worry.
