os 3.1 backgrounds/patterns not displaying
« on: December 12, 2005, 10:00:21 PM »
Well, I asked this along with a number of other mysteries in other threads so I thought I would try it again as it's own query. I have an A4000 desktop with a CyberstormPPC/060 installed and os 3.1. I would say that generally it runs pretty good except for two items: first, all the windows have plain backgrounds no matter what I set the prefs to. Pick a picture, pattern, whatever and it sits there staring at me like something was wrong with my face. Reboot, warm or cold start, no backgrounds... nada. When I go back into WBPattern editor all my selections are there, but nothing is displayed. Any ideas? Part 2: (might be related) I have a registered version of MUI 3.8 and I installed it and then went about customizing windows..... and nothing happens. No warnings, no flashing lights or guru mediations, just nothing happens. I try to add various gadgets or set up various patterns, sliders, whatever. I see no change in the machine.

So, any ideas what might be going on? I can get by with a pale blue screen and boring windows but it pisses me off that what should happen, doesn't. I spend a lot of time being pissed off these days, must be the prostate. Help me Oblio, you're my only hope!

For WB pattern: Try picking a picture with a different datatype to see if your datatype is screwed. (...like if you currently have .jpg, try an IFF)

For MUI: Is your keyfile in the right folder? Does the MUI prefs screen show that it's registered?

For both: Have you got some kind of Env handler running? If so, maybe it's screwing up. Do other prefs have a problem?

YIKES! I tried various images and presets to no avail and checked MUI and it is registered and all and the keyfile is where MUI put it... but as to your last point, well as Donny Rumsfeld would say "My golly goodness sakes!"
This machine is one of the Atlantis machines I got, the other being the Beast. As it turns out, when I copied everything from the two small hard drives onto this big hard drive I copied the ENV directory apparently, which brought with it a whole basketload of crap!! Lots of files referring to the previous owners and programs which may or may not lurk somewhere.... I still haven't tried all of the drawers to see if they work, some progs seem to be demoware, some just flat don't work and I think I'm missing a dongle or two vis-a-vis Scala. So I suppose now I should back that directory up and put in it only those files which my freshly formatted other desktop A4K has in its ENV directory and see what happens then. Thanks for the suggestions! Now let's see what I can do...
